Does anyone else find this a strange situation.

I was driving from home to my flat today, up through the A701, which was covered in rocks an such like for some reason, which in a practically track ready honda was not a comfortable experience. When i got to Edinburgh someone at the traffic lights pointed out my rear number plate had fallen off. I considered stopping for a new one or going back for the old one, but as my cars an import it's not the easiest to get the right size plate for it that i'd justify spending money on only to order the correct one as soon as i got back to my flat.

So i plowed on up through Scotland, without a back number plate in a car which to some more authority crazed members of the constabulary would be an ideal car to pull over to have a good poke about. Eventually i ended up with 2 traffic cars an a police jeep behind me, by this point i was sure i was getting pulled and possibly a fine/points, but when i pulled into the inside lane expecting to be followed by the flashing blues. Surprisingly through all the cars just passed me like i was in the most inconspicuous car possible.

Am i alone in thinking i deserved to be pulled over? i could have very well flew through a speed camera at 140mph with no indication of the car, not that i did but theoretically. Albeit i was hoping for a trouble free drive i find it strange i actually got it

I drove my VX around without a front plate for about 9 months and never got stopped.

Velcro is your friend for long or unfamiliar motorway journies;)

I never ran a front number plate on my Westfield. When crusing home I passed a cop car on day, it turned round and followed me before finally pulling me over a few miles later. He had a good look over the car before telling me he was going to have to fine me. However I convinced him that Kit cars comply to pre 1979 regulations and aren't required to display a number plate at the front. Complete lie of course but it worked. I even convinced my passenger at the time "I didn't know that, why is that?" he said after. The problem was I was pulled over in my home town and was waiting for it to come back on me one day when the cop found out the truth, but it never did.

You should have number plates front and rear and mounted vertically.

It seems to depend where about in the country you are and the particular police person as to what they will do.

I would have expected to get pulled with no rear number plate considering the police can pull you if your plates dirty or unreadable.

^^^

That was my thinking, was waiting for the blue's to come on, as a car like this

With no rear plate would to some police be the kind of car that would potentially take advantage of an unidentifiable car an go have some fun with their camera system. Which i did not do as they're are no speed camera's between my house and flat, plus i was trying to keep a low profile so i could avoid a pulling over, as i struggle to talk myself out of situations

Would you not get pulled for this as well as the number plate has to be mounted horizontal not vertical.

Pretty sure when i went to school, horizontal was "flat ways" i.e in line with the horizon (-) and vertically was 90 degrees to it "up and down ways" (|). Happy to admit when i am wrong tho.

Thank you very much sherman.

I have re read your post and must be missing something, the number plate should be mounted vertically to the ground, obviously not to the car!

How vertically? To within what tolerance of normal to the earth's surface? Does plod get his protractor out to check?

Well its just what the law states, dont think plod would get out a protactor and line it up with the horizon so i suppose if you werent being daft then as close to vertical as possible front and rear i.e not on the roof

Just after I'd imported my Viper, I got stopped in Aberdeen by traffic plod for having US plates on. They were totally arsey about it, saying it was 'fraudulant use of number plates'! Like I'd just blend into the background in Dodge Viper in Aberdeen!! Obviously that didn't stick once the PF got it. But the funny thing is that they could have got me for only having one number plate on and for speeding (they got me going 42mph in a 30). They chose to go for the bigger charge and got nothing...

Police seem to target imported cars as they don't know the rules on them theirselves, therefore tend to treat them with the same set of rules as a uk car.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/displayo...

I like to carry this around in my car to kill any debate over plate/font size, as i've heard it all since owning this car, including one arse of policeman suggesting that he'd make a point of giving me fines at any opportunity unless i changed my bootlid to a uk one and ran uk plates. Needless to say he gave my car the most thorough check under the sun when i produced the above document.

When I got stopped for having US plates they were wanting to impound my car. But I luckily had the UK plates that I was about to get professionally fitted in the boot! The car was taxed with the UK registration, I'd just not had time to get the plates put on. Then plod decided that he was taking my US plate back to the police station 'to check that I'd not set off any speed cameras'! The transport police are apparently not able to write stuff down. I've since found that that was theft but when I called up Police HQ, surprise, surprise, they didn't know what I was talking about... mad I presume my California plate is now on some traffic copper's desk (or are they important enough to have a desk?). Just one reason why I hate the filth!
