Yeah, I've been told the best thing to do is give the rest of the car a thin coat of fresh paint too. Sadly, the lowest quote I got for that was £700, which is just too much money for me.
Would a machine polish on the rest of the car make it easier to match? Paint work is quite shoddy all round

If the paintwork is shoddy all round, then simply getting the front end done will only make matters worse in my opinion.
Seriously, I can almost give you a gurantee that you'll get the front end done, which will look all nice and shiny but then it won't match the rest of the car well and it will irk the hell out of you
Given that it is A) an old-ish car and B) has red paint which has seen better days, my advice is to save some more cash for a full respray.
By the way. £700 for a full respray (assuming a good job) is a bloody good price.
Edit: Ah, I see that wasn't for a full respray...

I know what you mean, and believe me, if I had the money I would do a full respray. However, considering I can't really spend more than £500 MAX, I need to make do.
I really think the rest of the paint work can be saved with a good, hard machine polish. I'm getting the front resprayed because it looks like it's been hit with a shotgun, the bonnet has been painted extremely poorly and there's some filler in the bumper.
Surely a professional coach works can get a decent paint match? I really don't know much about it though :-( Advice?

Stick the £500 in the bank, gradually add to it and get the job done in time for the summer?
Failing that, and if you are dead set on the idea of just getting the front done, I guess it all hinges on just how shoddy the rest of the paintwork actually is. That will have the biggest bearing on how good a match you'll get.
Take the car to Dandrea Coachworks or Goudies and ask them to give you a no bullsh!t assessment on how well they could match it.
Also, if Simon of Simon's coachworks is the same guy who used to work out of a farm in Kilwinning, and worked for Bridgend Garage - I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole.
