Hit a massive pot hole under the electronic info display eastbound on the bypass at Dreghorn. Then came off at Hillend and hit a collapsed repair just after the Steading entrace.

Now my GTA has pretty hard suspension, but these both felt and sounded like the front of the car had exploded.

Anyone know who to complain to and where to send the bill for my re-alignment ? I notice that at both these locations the pot holes are at the join of new and old tarmac.

Anyone had any luck getting comp out of them ?

I agree, I travel to Edinburgh regularly and I do notice a major difference between the road quality of Aberdeen & Edinburgh. Aberdeen really doesn't have anything to boast about when it comes to road quality but Edinburgh is dire, like you say there are potholes everywhere - if you move to avoid one then you simply align yourself to another a few yards on. If you need signatures etc let me know!

Comp. is a nightmare ! I hit a missing drain cover , took out the tyre and trashed the alignment. Phone to report it , and to get temp. repair done to stop anyone else hitting it. Tried to claim, was told they are inspected regularily and it was fine last time inspected , so not our fault.
So best of luck.

I'm no expert, but I recall a conversation on a car forum about claiming for damage - you would need to prove the local authority had been negligent. i.e. they knew about the pothole(s) and did not have them/it repaired in a reasonable time. Which I would imagine is quite difficult to proove.

Also, some sort of proof that it was a pothole that caused the damage to your vehicle, which again might be difficult unless you had evidence your tracking was checked just before you hit the pothole, and was checked again just after it.

I haven't driven in Edinburgh for a few months now but I do recall it being particularly bad for potholes. Maybe all the contractors who usually repair the roads are too busy with the tram project just now.

Phone Clarence on 0800 23 23 23 every time you encounter a potentially dangerous defect (including speed bumps).

Once they know their excuse is gone...

I did succesfully get Edinburgh council to pay out for a new wheel for a Range Rover, but it took bl**dy ages and I had to jump through several hoops. They (at that time, anyway) employed a firm specifically to handle these claims and wear you down / catch you out.

Photographic evidence, witnesses, times/dates, report it to Clarence, keep your receipts.

Good luck.

Not to mention the centre being a nightmare of one-way streets!

Phoned Clarence and was told the bypass is a major trunk road ( no st )which is BEAR's responsibility. Then told them about HillEnd and was told that was also BEAR.

Phoned BEAR Scotland after getting the wrong number from Clarence. Bloke was a real mouth breather who mumbled everything i told him as he typed it into his puter. He kept saying he wasnt from Edinburgh... Anyway, i have a code for each pothole. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to fix them. Will update the thread.

I had to have the rear suspension on my GT2 replaced after driving in Edinburgh. The city centre is an absolute nightmare with the trams!!
How they get away with it I don't know. The roads have been terrible for years, but now they are totally shocking!!

Yep, I though Aberdeen's roads were very poor until I drove around Edinburgh. Saying that, I didn't see one on Sunday. (it was dark mind)

Since coming to Edinburgh in 1973 the roads have been getting worse and worse and the City is now an absolute shambles. After 33 years I got fed up paying rates/council tax to the City of Edinburgh Cooncil and moved to the Borders where the roads, although not perfect, are magnitudes better than those of Edinburgh.

It is possible to claim off the Cooncil or Bear but you have to prove that they have been negligent. I claimed off Perth and Kinross cooncil many years ago but it was a hassle to say the least.

PS Anyone remember who that clown was who was Edinburgh's transport and roads guru many years back. Yes - that same clown is now Chancellor of the Exchequor and look at the state the country is in !!

Couldn't agree more. Excluding the tram works the roads generally are terrible. My TVR gets with the low profile tires etc seems to feels every bump but even in my subaru legacy I find that some of the pot holes just destroy your tyres, rims, suspension etc. Car tax is obviously well spent here.tumbleweed
Rant over, glad I only pay the low tax for my TVRbiglaugh

Since this thread has started I've been noticing more and more potholes in Aberdeen, there are really severe ones on Union terrace also at the roundabout at the end of South college street on the bridge side. Is is Clarence in Aberdeen too?
