OT but some advice from those in the know.
in needing a new car dilemma mode (again) i have a list narrowed down based on my requirement, light and handling feature higher than outright speed! Needs to seat 4/5 persons if required. Otherwise its a no brainer MX5.

Cheapy choices; Audi 90 quattro (know these pretty well), GTi6.
Dearer choices; celica 190 , E46 hopefully 330ci (my original choice last year)

Any help eliminating would be great, or additions?
GTI6 good but brittle. Had one, loved it, crashed it twice.

If I were you I'd look at getting E36 328 sport. What is your budget?
Following onwards as not to go WAY off topic.

GTI6, i have that thought, our first car was a 306 some 10 years ago, was a paltry 1.6 but it handled really well and had no brakes, was very french but i always hankered after one then forgot until SOTW appeared in there for £1k, £2k for a good one, seems value for money. but substance is fairly important, reliable, lottery i suppose, could buy a good or bad one... oh and i crashed ours too, it never recovered... perhaps that's rose tinted specticles though?

Audi 90 quattro, 20v sport, oddball choice but they are rather bulletproof and can set it up for handling fairly cheap/easy. but sadly they are like rocking horse poo to find a good one. if its an older car i get i am after something close to mint. only seen one in 6-7 months that approaches that, owner decided not to let it go in the end. Had 3 quattro's now and liked them all, current one is a TDi family wagon, quick but not in the way i really want.

my brother just bought a E34(?) 528 which i am quite impressed with. did consider a late 328sport, nikosil not an issue with that era six pots? Thats what put me off one tbh. but i have read its the poor mans M3, and i am the poor man, i dont have an issue with that, but i know again wife doesnt like the shape. So lets call a 10 year cap on the age.

Celica OK a little bit dull, but i have always liked the look, drove one three years ago, handling was spot on, very nimble even as a bog standard car and surprisingly roomy. DC2 is off wife doesn't like them at all, despite me trying to persuade.

I had a audi coupe quattro 2.8 previously which i still miss, not the best for track work but capable all rounder. i do fancy an S2 but i feel i have been there already and want something different, something that falls in that category if its older. Newer, along the safety lines (ie to carry wife and 3 children if other car is out of action or whatever) Budget up to £6k at a push... the newer generation Audi's just dont do it for me.

any other suggestions? Thoughts? Comments... oh and the largest i guess is track/ ring or other. I regret never taking the coupe quattro on a track so want something that can do it, i would enjoy. No racing driver but enjoy a nice handling car, outright power not the biggest factor. Oh an a last one, NA, i am not after a turbo...

Out of those I'd go for the E36 328 or the GTI6. Celica 190 has a nice revvy engine (which I've driven) but is probably going to cost twice as much as the beemer or pug. I'd guess an old Audi will need a lot of ££ thrown at it just to get it up to scratch.

Good call.

Although, frankly, if istoo's wife doesn't like the shape of the E36 (which IMO is getting better with age), then she'll not respond too well to a Japanese rep-mobile with an ironing board stuck to the boot smile

The later 328 Sports didn't suffer nikasil issues and like most BMW 'issues', failures were few and far between and oft rectified early on. IMO it's a hell of a lot of car for the money and correct wheel drive too. Compared with the Audi's it's a laser guided missile. Naturally, any car you look at will be higher mileage now (unless you're really lucky), so a damper replacement will be essential, but this applies to all older cars.

Like I said, the GTI6 is a cracking car with fantastic (but snappy) handling. However, the E36 328 (or even an M3) would be my choice.

oddly enough she doesnt mind the accord Type R... is it just me or does everyone else suffer this, or the married brigade?

i was very impressed with the E46 330, best try and find an E36 and have a drive and see what i make of it all.

I prefer the older car. It feels more coupe like inside and is a better drive IMO. If you're a fat bd you'll struggle to get comfortable, but otherwise, it's a nice place to spend time.

not fat.. yet but i am tallish 6 ft 3. coupes always offered more space for the lankier driver. if its got headroom issues thats more my concern as such.. place to be fully understand... @ 360 person, GTi6 your refering to that's sitting doing nothing?

OK, i need to go and drive a E36 328 methinks, i may well buy and old audi anyway as i just like them, maybe use it as a hack, store at folks place. not the fastest/ best handling but one thats become ingrained and i keep coming back to.

i am tempted to hold for a wee while and see how the car market settles on out. but plenty of bargains at the minute it seems.

Any other suggestions/recommendations? This si a semi rambling one but i specifically woudl rather hear a NO stay away story!

When you said no turbo, I take it, this is in reference to the ur quattro??

What about a Jap Import Impreza/Legacey most are low milage, and can be had for not a lot of cash.

i like UR's but i dont think enough to buy one over other cars. Have two turbos just now, just seems to cost more and i like working an NA engine.

I am just not taken by most of the jap territory, good cars just doesn't do it for me i am afraid.
