Boy racer types or the "upper class" of Edinburgh
Discussion
Who's worse to encounter on the roads?
The reason i ask this is because of an incident when i was leaving Edinburgh yesterday. I was plittering along in tea time traffic, when traffic came to a standstill i stopped just short, possibly nose over a yellow box area. Sat for a moment until met with a good 10 second horn blast, looked over and a white merc coupe with a clearly "upper class" (In the loosest term possible going by her language and manner) lady waving at me to move back so she could get out.
Now, in standstill traffic how could i possibly move back so she could fit between me and a bus?
I looked behind and shrugged as it was clearly impossible, at this point she barged out into the middle of the road and got on her high horse about how i should move back for her and how i was breaking the law for the front lip of my car being in the yellow box. The worst of it was she tried to pass judgement about my car and branded me a boy racer, quite confident my 90's jap box could make short work of her poverty spec merc if it ever came to that, but thats far from the point.
I am by no manner of means a boy racer, I attend university and i drive an eg6 civic vti, totally standard exterior with exception of a set of lightweight wheels, a discreet stainless exhaust and lowered slightly on coilovers. Albeit it is not standard in terms of internals, therefore does get some funny looks with a lumpy idle and struggling in traffic, but i do not drive it hard in public, i have put too much time and money into my car to not feel the effects of losing it, being a student and all moneys going to be inevitably tight, buying books and all....
What i am getting at here is that i'm starting to think that it is a small amount of the older generation that are in the wrong when it comes to road etiquette. The type that are in the wrong would also likely be the type to provoke and belittle the young drivers to the point where they act irrationally (hormones and man points and all that) and fuel this image that young drivers with a car other than standard are going to be idiotic children who should not be on the same road as the general public.
I am aware of those who bring truth to the term boy racers as their are enough of them around, but for everything bad i have seen a boy racer do i can +1 it with the actions of a bmw/merc driver. (undertaking in towns, motorways, bullying on the roads etc etc)
I am by no means tarring bmw/merc drivers with the same brush, nor am i siding with neds, just frustrates me how certain people can go on like that and then sit down and rant and rave about how young people are yobs on the road etc etc.
I am prepared to be flamed for this.

I completely agree with you. I find that as you say for every boy race there is also a TT in some sort of fancy saloon tailgating you on the bypass especially in the wet.
For example how many times a week do you here that there are tailbacks on the bypass due to a crash and this is not due to boy racers.
I think that generally road etiquette across the board has got worse over the past few years and with added problems of the Trams and road works in Edinburgh with gas works etc just adds to red face syndrome.
I am prepared to be shot down in flames to as I am a 30 year old who drives a TVR Tuscan and am labelled a TT anyway.

It's hard to ignore them when they have blocked your path in an attempt to preach and belittle youBetter yet it's hard to ignore them when they are trying to sit in your back seats on the motorway. Flashing lights and intimidation is hard to ignore. By no means do i retaliate as i get more enjoyment from simply leaving them to look like what they are in front of a city full of traffic, a complete tit with nothing better to do than to mouth off to youths.

It sounds like the bus was taking up most of the space in the yellow restricted box - quite amusing she chose you not the bus driver to have a crack at! Laugh it off and move on, you just cant help idiots sometimes

As for road behaviour, I had a middle aged mum in a people carrier charging towards me on the wrong side of the road who went beserk at me for not giving way despite the obstruction being on her side of the road.
I tried explaining this calmly and politely and she told me to "Stop being a and get out her fvcking way".
I suggested we call the police for guidance on who had right of way and she seemed to find reverse ok after that.

Box junctions seem to confuse people. Sat at the entry to one on Friday because the other side was blocked and the guy in the car behind was gesticulating wildly, and seemed generally on the point of having a breakdown because I hadn't rolled 20 feet forwards and blocked the junction.
Remember seeing a thing a few years ago that the cops had sat with a video camera on the Lothian Road of Princes Street, recording at the box junction up to Charlotte Square. Apparently they were coining it in as cars one after the other trundled onto the box and just looked at the police in confusion while waiting for the lights to change again!

I had this problem with the 996 tt - bought the Aston, and though it's slower, everybody just waves and smiles at me like I'm in the 'Railway Children'It takes 30 seconds longer to get where I wanted, but I arrive feeling great. Try one (they are piss cheap at the moment!)

Do you drive the GT2 around the city centre? I would LOVE to see a 997 GT2!
No, sorry m8, the "M" is long gone,
And the porsche is a 996 Turbo with a oem GT2 front and a "Misha 911" rear wing,
The car is modded to a high std, engine, brakes, suspension the works! i even had the oem rear seat deletion kit and oem GT2 roll cage fitted at one stage but my girlfriend has a wee lad so the rear seats had to go back in
When i am home the car is around and about, its a bit hard to miss so if you see me give me a wave (of the nice sort) and i will stop and show you round it if you want
cheers RG

Sound like a great car! If I see you I will certainly waveAnd the porsche is a 996 Turbo with a oem GT2 front and a "Misha 911" rear wing,
The car is modded to a high std, engine, brakes, suspension the works! i even had the oem rear seat deletion kit and oem GT2 roll cage fitted at one stage but my girlfriend has a wee lad so the rear seats had to go back in
When i am home the car is around and about, its a bit hard to miss so if you see me give me a wave (of the nice sort) and i will stop and show you round it if you want
cheers RG
