About 4 years ago, 59 in a 30 zone earned me 5 points and a fine of around 350 quid.
(no excuses but it was a 30 limit leading into a village on a country road which was otherwise a 60 limit, I was done within 20m of the 30 limit and I would have been doing 30ish by the time I was near any civilisation)
Edited to add: guess that does read like an excuse

You may get away without a ban, depending on road conditions, where you were etc. Needing you car for work does help. I'd speak to this guy... he's as good as you'll get. (He'll give you an idea of cost beforehand)

(He got me off 100 in a 70 with 6 points and £200).

first of all thanks guys for all the responses. I was stopped by a police car parked on the side of the road in the evening on a sat night---so i suspect thats a radar gun. Was overtaking a car as I wanted to get the wife to a hospital to get checked out as she was feeling slightly unwell. Anyways no dangerous driving involved.
A few years back I got done doing 61 in a 30, I wrote a very groveling letter saying that I only attained the speed for a brief moment, weather conditions were good, no other traffic, did not endanger the public etc etc, got 6 points and a £250 fine.
A year later I got done a 99.125 on the A90 by some very sneaky coppers who told me given I had 6 points already I'd most likely be banned. Wrote another letter as above and got 5 ponts and a £500 fine. Very lucky but if you show you really are genuinely sorry for your actions and that your a honest hard working person etc then sometime they give you a break.
Down to 5 points now and these come off in Jan thank goodness! Had to drive for 18months on 11 points which was very nerve wracking!

That's good advice. Also mention that the car was correctly serviced, maintained, MOT'd, insured at the time of the offence. Helps differentiate you from the real car criminals. If you do get considered for a ban then YOUR inconvenience and circumstances matter very little. It's any real adverse impact on your dependants that's taken into account.
If your wife/girlfriend was feeling so unwell that you needed to overtake and break the speed limit, by a good margin, in a 30' to get her to hospital quickly then why not phone an ambulance?
Personally I think your 'excuse' as it stands will sound very poor in court and I wouldn't risk it. Hold your hands up, take it on the chin and grovel. A lot.

Or you could claim that at that particular moment in time your vehicle was an ambulance (look it up in the dictionary) and as such you were claiming a speed exemption as to "not hinder the vehicle for the purpose of which it is being used" Bit of a long shot and would probably have had to be used at the time you were stopped but any suggestion that might work?If your wife/girlfriend was feeling so unwell that you needed to overtake and break the speed limit, by a good margin, in a 30' to get her to hospital quickly then why not phone an ambulance?

At danger of straying from the topic, maybe it depends where you live, but my experience of phoning an ambulance is that they take a very long time to attend an injury. If the option is there (and depending on the injury) I'd take the casualty to the hospital in the available transport.John
