Got up early this morning to see the QE2 on its final trip back to the clyde, I cant think of any other boat that would draw as many people out to see it. Driving along the coast there were groups of people in every layby and car park. This was my first time seeing the QE2 and more than likely the last so I tried to get some decent pictures.

Popped down yesterday to see her in Greenock with my daughter. A truly gorgeous ship, so much more graceful than the Queen Mary 2, which looks like an office block on its side. Saw them both in Southampton a couple of years back when they were in port together.

She is a beautiful ship isn't she. I recently watched the documentary on the QM2, which left me cold regardless of its technology. when i was a kid I loved big ships and loved going out on the Mersey Ferry when they came into port.

Lovely pics - watched the fireworks last night then the ship itself off down the Clyde all lit up. Spectacular.

Nice day and good pics.
Shame it was not advertised in some way.
When are they launching the new destroyers on the clyde.
I seen them moored up last week side by side, they are strange looking things.

Very nice pics of a great ship.

Had the pleasure of dragging her around a couple of times on the Forth.

A lot nicer than the block of flats that is replacing her.

HMS Dragon is due to be launched on 17th November - afternoon I think.

Funny that because when she was in the Forth in the late '90s I could see her from my office window and was surprised how little she was.
Same goes for the Ark Royal.

Doesn't stop her being extremely graceful though.

The hulls in the water (Dauntless and Diamond IIRC) have already been launched - they are now being fitted out before commencing sea trials.

Nerdish point - it won't be 'HMS' until the vessel has completed sea trials to the satisfaction of the RN and is commissioned into the Fleet!

I managed to see the QE2 in Queensferry today - weather was crap, but Forth Rail Bridge and ship made for good photos, and it was funny seeing all the yank tourists lapping up the 'Scottishness' of the pipe bands and tartan tat!

Not such a nice day for the Firth of Forth send-off. Real low cloud when the flypast went over; could hear them but couldn't see anything. If they'd been below the cloud they'd have hit the Forth Bridge!

Anyway, a couple of snaps 'oot the windae' of the fine lady. She was always the nicest looking of the liners that moor off SQ. I remember as a kid being taken to see her on the slipway on the Clyde when she was being build. There's showing my age eek ...and she's retiring now and I'm still working frown

Got to say though the whole thing was pretty poorly publicised, organised and executed. We just don't seem to be able to do these sort of events in that same way as, say, the Americans. I'd bet if this was a US ship leaving under the Golden Gate for the last time there would be buntings on the bridge, flags, fireworks, searchlights etc. As to the 'dancing tugs' [as advertised in local press]...3 of the Hound Point tugs spraying water; you get much the same scene when there's an oil spill. And the 'flotilla' [likewise advertised]...I counted 17 small sailing boats, a couple of wee motor boats and a speedboat or two, plus the usual suspects of the Maid of the Forth, the inshore rescue boats and yon other tour boat. If I'd made the trip to see the 'event' [as opposed to looking out the window] I'd have been pretty dissapointed.

Sad to see her go though. I've visted the Queen Mary a few times in Long Beach and the 'floating hotel' thing doesn't really appear to have worked terribly well as she's looking a bit sad and un-loved (and bolted to the bottom I undestand). Hopefully they'll do a better job with the QE2; but a better option than being scrapped [or sinking in HK harbour].
