The other half and i are off this coming week and we want to head somewhere up the west coast.

We're both originally from Glasgow but have been living in Aberdeen for the past few years and are really looking forward to a trip up the West.. We're in Glasgow at the moment and will be heading off Tue to come back Friday.

She's a keen photographer, and i'm a keen driver, so we need the best of both worlds - but i need to head off via Callander to drop my diff in to Dreadnought for new ring & pinion.

We can drive all of Tuesday for all i care - i'm not overly fussed where we end up, but she'd like to see Skye. If we did head there i'd probably treat her to a meal at the 3 Chimneys, but don't want to be too extravagant for the rest of the trip!

So we're looking at - what route to take? where to end up? where to eat? and where to sleep? I would like to keep accom costs under £100 per night. Fuel/miles is not an issue. Departing Glasgow Tuesday AM, and heading back to Glasgow on Friday at any time.

What do you suggest?

I'm biased, but you won't do better than Applecross/Torridon. (Easy reach of Skye too)

Check out www.Torridon.org (look at the 'roads' page!

If you need more info on places to stay, roads to drive etc, e mail me (or Northo!)

You wont get much better scenary than the Glencoe road to Fort William...the A82 I think.
Plenty places to stay up there, I got a B&B with the visitScotland website last weekend.

Glencoe, Skye (I think the south of Skye, Sleat is lovely personally), Plockton, Lochcarron, AppleX, Shieldaig, Torridon, Gairloch, Ullapool, (Lochinver if you have time). A fair few miles there but I think that'll cover the best of the West and North West Highlands!

had a good trip, weather was dreadful but the views were still good.

went North to Ballachulish via Calendar and stayed at the Ballachulish Hotel for the first leg of the trip.. Next morning headed A82 > A87 towards Skye, and stayed in Portree.. couple of really nice nights there.. took a few wee trips round Skye, did the tourist thing at Talisker - excellent.

Meant to head back via Plockton and then Fort Augustus but the weather was really closing in and we'd never have even got out the car.. we've been to Plockton before anyway.

Thanks for your suggestions!

WARNING! - Thread hi-jack!

Yesterday I put up a slideshow of pics from the area. If you have a few mins to spare...

BTW - it'll 'autorun' changing pic every 6 secs.

quite alright Steve, my girlfriend loves your pics.

Funnily enough we were almost going to book for the torridon inn and noticed who did the website!

anyway, yeah she will have loads of pics - i had to stop every 1/4mile so she could try and get that "must have" photo. Some of them were passing clicks out of the open window as i lost my patience after a while!

Anyway, we were off in various places for a fortnight, so once she's finished working through th 4gigs of photos she'll have i'll try and get some up here.
