Not posted for a while, although have noticed a sharp change in the car market of recent.
I am thinking of selling my Grand Jeep Cherokee 06 Overland with all the trimmings. But I can't help but wonder am I on a losing track?

My points are:
- Does Gordons new taxation really affect my 4x4 more than any other 3litre diesel?
- Are 4x4's really hated that much?
- Everyone is bashing on about the credit crunch as a blame for just about anything. Surely if the car is priced accordingly it will sell anyway.

Anyone sold a 4x4 recently and any stories?

Many thanks,
Chris

Unless you are trading up it looks like your best bet is to stay put....

I have two mates in the trade, one says that 4x4s are worth nothing at the mo as they cant get rid of them, mostly due to the fuel costs more that the tax. His work has a cayenne they have had for a ages and if its there for much longer it will take root he reckons.

I paid £9k for a petrol Ranger Rover five months ago. I've just been offered £2750 trade.

Probably not as much as you'd like unfortunately. Was looking at a 56 plate Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD Limited with around 12,000 miles in Motorpoint for less than £14k, great value as a secondhand buy but what price are the dealers buying them in at, sounds like its pretty low for what you're getting.

I'm not really getting the whole car taxed to oblivion issue, Ok Gordon has increased the bandings and the one-off first year tax for new cars could be a killer on those with top band CO2 output but for anything used (like OP's Jeep), you're an extra £20 or so each month for tax, it's not really a huge deal on the grand scale of things is it?

So why are dealers offering such low prices for 4x4s, is it fuel costs putting buyers off, or scaremongering/credit crunch causing a lower demand, so dealers have to consequently offer less when buying them in - any dealers on here that can offer insight?

P.S. sorry, just realised i basically made the same point as the OP but worded slightly differently, just agreeing really smile

Supply and demand, consumer confidence has gone and at the moment its an oversupply and no demand, dealers are taking the piss and in many cases you will find main franchised dealers are cheaper than the independants, i suppose they just need to keep cars moving and have bigger margins so have more flexibility to ship things on!

The Limited spec is a lot less financially than the Overland, and I have seen over the last 2 months a number of Overland and Limiteds going for vastly differnt sums.

My next question would be then...I am destined to sell it as I don't actually use it apart from Saturdays with my wife and son, which I can actually use the co. car for. Where is best sell it myself?

I have owned too many cars and dealt with many dealers to know that they really aren't interested in customer loyalty whatsoever so I know from previous exp. I will get absolutely no favours or "good deals" as quite simply there isn't such a thing in the dealer trade.

Are Autotrader, Ebay, Gumtree etc good places to start (even Pistonheads?)?
My ad and price just needs to be the best on the market at the time

Thank you to all for comments, much appreciated, and good to hear other viewpoints, cheers.

Try them all! Just be prepared for the usual time wasters. See what happens, you might end up keeping it if you will lose too much. Have a look and see if there are any owners forums, they are usually good places to advertise too.

So of course I decided not to trade it. As much as I don't like it (unreliable) I do like a V8 to hack about in and it is supremely comfortable and luxurious. And if the dealer didn't want the extra £k's I was going to put in his hand that's up to him.

And I've got my old Porker 944 for a bit of fun and my XJS on which all my hard earned is lavished.

the market is a funny thing, the price of petrol goes up 30p a litre and a (relatively) small tax raise on duty, and large car prices drop by 5k - 10k. Financially it doesnt add up.
Maybe its that in conjunction with people generally having less money too. It just seems a little skewed to me.
