As some of you may be aware, I compete in speed events – mostly sprints but the odd hillclimb.

I’ve been running a bike engined Westfield for a few years but I’m now pondering the future.

What I’d really like to do is to have a go in one of the single seater classes before I pack it in.

The thing is though, I’m lacking in the talent department … in fact, to be perfectly candid, I’m pretty average. I have the odd event where I’m on the pace but I’ll never have the consistency to come anywhere close to the fast guys. I don’t have aspirations to win a championship or anything like that but I’d really like the odd class win here and there.

Now, and here’s the kicker, I’m fortunate enough to have a few bob in the bank and a very understanding wife.

So, I came up with a cunning plan the other day. I’m considering making a significant investment in a very fast and sorted car. The thinking is that I’ll hopefully seem quick as the quality of the car will mask my inability.

What do you folks think? Should I go for it or would I attract criticism on an internet forum?

Oh, one thing to add, there is no motorsport heritage in my family although I do believe that my late uncle Jimmy won a cartie race in Kilmarnock in the 50s (it was apparently constructed from old pram components and a timber box).

Thanks in advance for your views – I really do value them.

Cheers,

Eric smile

Low drag Austin 7 or a low frontal area'd Bentley Special? There are always a few kicking about in classic car magazines.

I was thinking more along the lines of an ex 2008 Red Bull rolling chasis and a Spanker V16 lump which needs rebuilt every 73 running seconds.

Thanks for the the thought though.

Well if you're going to get sarcastic at every turn, I won't tell you there are a few good single seaters around, a certain GWJ had an engine for sale a wee while ago.

Look around and you shall find something to tickle your fancy.

If you're serious (and I'm never really sure if you Scots are) what you really want is a Jedi.

No, I'm not serious.

Though, in retrospect, perhaps a tad too subtle ... maybe?

Nah! this is a 'clear as day' pisser pull.

Actually, I have been thinking about a Jedi ... with a blown V8 (two grafted 'busa blocks) and the new Japanese brain implant shift mechanism. I read that you only have to think; "first", "second", "third" etc and it'll select the right gear with rev matching and everything.

Clever!

Choose your class carefully, I'm not up to whose who in sprints and hills these days, but look at the existing competitors and check out the British Championship cars for sale at the end of the season. 1100 class might be very competative whereas 1600 class might be less so. Then check out the most competative cars and buy a good fast reliable set up. Run the current tyres at the beginning of the season until you are used to the set up and then buy some new demon rubber (this way you avoid buying last years stock!) With single seaters you have a lot more setting up for each event get as much info as you can from hte previous owner.

Just my 2d worth.

Guys - I'm joking!

Read the original post again and think about it in the context of recent discussions on circuit racing at KH.

He he, like it!

However there is part truth in your original post:-

Oh, one thing to add, there is no motorsport heritage in my family although I do believe that my late uncle Jimmy won a cartie race in Kilmarnock in the 50s (it was apparently constructed from old pram components and a timber box).

That is indeed true, he beat old Willy "old orange crates" Johnston in a downhill sprint to the finish. Willy was a dirty cheating kind, keeping some of the oranges to throw at the competition! Willy had some talent, but sadly had a sore leg or something that he blamed on his lack of wins. His father though, man that was some driver...........They raced around the time that Billy "new crates" Wilson raced, no one liked him though, he would turn up with his new crates, brand new wheels, basically he hadn't had to work hard for his crates and wheels, he was, how can I put it, a cheque book cartie racer........

Ah those were the days Eric........when this was all fields etc etc

He did, but given he barely ran the car competitively in two years with that engine it's fairly obvious why it's for sale.
