Just wondering if anyone knows of any good quiet spots on the west coast that would be good for a quiet weekend away in a tent? Would prefer not to be in a camp site next to loads of caravans. I had thought of going to the Isle of Gigha but its quite far away from Glasgow.

Any suggestions?

If you don't want to be to far from Glasgow how about this. Just off the M8.

Junction 22 , a bit noisy but very cheap.

Achnihaird north of Ullapool near Stac Pollaidh....one of the most beautiful campsites I've ever been to...basic, quiet and wonderful views but check, as I heard it might be closing....

Always loved Ullapool and Applecross. The one at Applecross has a small restaurant too.

(on cue)

There are plenty of places round here www.torridon.org

If you don't want the campsite life then just pitch your tent wherever. There are a couple of great places where I have seen tents pitched before - if you decide to come up this far, let me know and I will send you a map showing where they are.

If you are doing it this month, bring a midge hood or lots of Avon Skin so Soft - they sell it in all the shops here and it's the only thing that defeats the midges (if used liberally!)

I think the point of Cannondales post might have been missed here. He said he thought Gigha might be a bit far from Glasgow, it is 98 miles.
Ulapool and Torridon are 230 miles away so are possibly not ideal candidates in the close to Glasgow requirements.

However quality campsites in close proximity to Glasgow are a bit thin on the ground, here are two of the better ones.

Bigblock is kind of right but all suggestions are welcome because next year will not be a year of jetting off to sunnier climes (although I hope the tent comes in handy for going to Le Mans)!!

Does anyone know of any sites down around Castle Douglas/ Gatehouse of Fleet? I know the area fairly well but not well enough to remember any locations for camping!!

Thanks for the all of the reponses so far.

how about the island of Arran, Glen Sannox was pretty cool. it depends also if you want a site, which will be full of sprogs at this time of year, or are prepared to wild camp, if its just for a night or 2 it is the best way in my opinion

can recommend gairloch as well, just back form renting one of the wigwams with the kids.. ace!

http://www.wigwamholidays.com/Sands_Wigwams

ullapool and around torridon, but around that stretch is slightly warmer, and a lot to see, and scenery.. utterly stunning. just beware of: midges, rain, ground so hard you will need a hilti gun to put in tent pegs!

is the name a bike reference?

Yip. I'm afraid I'm that original!! You into bikes of the pedalled variety yourself?

Thanks for the suggestion of the wigwams. Remember seeing them on Landward or the like a while back. Sounds like it's a must do!

Cheers

comments are all fair above, agree with Semi Hemi, if you ride and like the outdoors, going wild can be brilliant. West coast Scotland is A stunning and B wonderful escapism. Go and have a look at Steve (GetCarters) photography to get an idea of the area, (he is irritatingly good at it, read as brilliant), provided you've never been. At the moment the weather is truly awful. But this hinges on what you want to get from the camping, i chose the wigwams as it meant the weather wouldn't put a dampener on it, my kids are still young, but it offered the same experience, with some basic mod-cons... oh and that beach, Gairloch is massively under rated. Your not too far from Torridon ,but that stretch from Kyle to Ullapool is agonizingly pretty. . If you ride then you will get it... I cant go on about it enough.

I am currently of the Yeti persuasion, until recently my bike fleet always out valued the car fleet! You will find a lot of the petrol heads have bike porn as well smile
