Best way to Europe
Discussion
Let's try a thread that doesn't get locked Does anyone have any experience of getting to Europe from Scotland. Can't be doing with driving to Dover (seems like a complete waste of a day) and understand that probably Rosyth and Newcastle are the two nearest and easiest ways of getting to mainland Europe. Just fancy going for a bit of a blast for a few days to a week and seeing some sights. My understanding is that the Superfast from Rosyth is pretty dear and is due to be canned anyway. Anyone have any experience of going from the North East/Newcastle? Any advice and do's and don'ts appreciated e.g. watch your speed here, must go there etc. Thank you all in advance. Also don't know if there are any groups going that are organised that anyone could tag along on?
When you wiegh up the hidden costs of extra miles, wear and tear on car, petrol or diesel then the Rosyth ferry is cheaper than driving to Dover etc, Its not that expensive if you book in advance but of course the service is stopping in september, I'd try going from newcastle, absolutly no point driving motorway miles in the UK.

Perhaps an odd suggestion, but have you looked into getting your vehicle transported to the south coast? Would that be any cheaper on fuel?
Not sure - reckon I could do Edinburgh to Dover on prob a tank and a half? So about £120, I'm guessing it may cost more than this to get it transported. It's just such a rip off getting across the water from up here - DFDS from Newcastle is coming in at £515 and Rosyth Superfast £620!! Am I just naive, seems a lot when Dover to Calais is £170edinandrew said:
Cheers Stang, didn't know that forum existed - a lot of them are Southern England focussed I think form the initial look I just had. Sorry for lack of quotes, don't know how to use the quote thingy and don't want to get it wrong!!!
That's ok. I rarley go in it myslef but you can get links to other places which can be helpful.I prefer the P&O boats to Rotterdam and or Zeebrugge - sometimes cost is cheaper than Newcastle even allowing for extra miles

Another vote for Newcastle to Ijmuiden, done one trip already this year (Le Mans) and a jaunt to the South of France (Dijon, Ales, Ledenon trackdays) then the 'Ring booked for the end of August.
Timings are good and saves the drive/hotel through Englandshire (Le Mans actually worked out further but I still preferred it). The 'entertainment' on the boat is a laugh if you don't take it seriously, recommend the open air bar on the top deck if the weather is nice - food is expensive and generally poor.
The ferry seems alot if you're on your own but with a group of cars and sharing a cabin can be more like £260. Prices also go up the later you leave it...

Have to agree I thought the restaurants were expensive and the food very ordinary to say the least. A few of us went from Hull in May, it was 1/3 of the cost compared to going from Rosyth. Drive down was a bit of a bh, but as there was 4 of us it wasn't too bad. Plus you're only a 5 hour max drive from the 'Ring from Zeebrugge.
Boat was quite nice, food was good and the drink was about the same as buying a pint in the pub.
It's about 400 miles from Aberdeen to Hull, we left about 8am and were parked in the queue for the boat at half 3. Plus the advantage is it gets you into Zeebrugge at 8 in the morning, meaning you can be at the 'Ring in time for lunch.
It's worth exploring all the options before you book, i think the next time we go we'll try the Newcastle boat to see what it's like.

Drive from Edinburgh to Dover, it will take about 9 hours driving on the limit on the motorway and through the road works. It'll be cheaper and faster than the Superfast, it takes 17 hours or something, you could be in France in 11 if you drive.
You'd still have a hotel to pay for though.willtvr said:
