Can anybody recommend a suitable service/restoration expert for a 1973 Ferrari Dino? It's been in our garage for 3 years (in a Carcoon) and was working ok. The gearbox might need some attention, the brakes would need to be checked, new tyres, oil change etc. Would be great to get it on the road again.

Thanks

Stay away from Greypaul in Edinburgh, they might be OK with the modern diagnostic stuff, but my mate put his 308GTB in for some work and they were over 6 months trying to tune the Webbers! And they are still not right! The mechanic at Top Gear Specialist Cars in Armadale (Ph 01501 763800)has a very good reputation with all Ferrari's, worth a call.

Hi
main Dino specialist is meant to be Nick Cartwright down in south Yorkshire. they do nice work, but are mainly into selling just now although he and the two boys are reuted to do a nice job. Lots of oter Ferrari Specialists about who will charge accordingly but all located in England. Carlo Mainly does Lambos and not sure he would feel happy with a Dino. Can ask him.
Bob Houghton previoulsy of MHT has a great reputation, but all these guys charge a lot. As dino prices are so high just now I would go for a top specialsit down south to give your car whatever provenace it might need
Assume its a 246? not a GT4? If is the GT4 my advice would be different!

Hi Paul

Sorry, posted my reply before I saw your message. It's a 246gt, not thinking of selling it in the near future just want it back on the road. (btw It's the only car we've owned that's increased in value!)

Thanks for the info on Carlo and Bob Houghton much appreciated.

you could always try Classic Restorations, based in Alyth, Perthshire. Seemingly have a very good reputation website here : http://www.classicrestorations.co.uk/

Hi Paul,

I've been looking at a GT4 and wondering where I might be able to get it serviced (I'm in Aberdeen), what's your advice there please.

Thanks, Mark.

They do have a good reputation but hugely expensive tho.
My F355 will be going to Carlo again this Sept.

hi
regarding servicing on a GT4. depends what you need doing to it? If is a basic srvice then to be honest any comptent garage may be able to do it or even yourself ifis just plugs filter and oil. is an easy car to work on. If is a bit more and want carbs balanced or belts changed then may be safer to give to someone you know. You can download the entire workshop manuals and serivce bulletins from the web to hand over.
I dont know any garages in Aberdeen or mechanics but may wanto get in contact with tony Dawson the solicitor in Aberdeen if u know him and ask. I know tony and he has alaways had nice cars. If not sure can ask him and let you know

That's great thanks Paul, just need to convince the missus it's the right move. The only problem may be sorting out how my 3 year old is going to sit in it!

The sapce in the back is fine and it does have two three point belts in the back. for a very small child the seats are actually very good and comfortable. I have travelled four up in the car quite a lot! My daughters are now 20, 18 and 17 and had thenm out in Glasgow last week. Had three 17 year olds in car on sat as picked youngest up froma party and two boys suddenly appeared and needed a lift home! Also had a lot of small kids in back and they like it as they have a good view out, there own 'special' seat and they like the noise and smell of the old leather!
Can't pretend it is a safe a modern euro box with 30 airbags, or that you could put a child seat in the back with the seat shape, but I rckon its good and a practical size boot for a long weekend.
Get your wife on here! perhaps she will catch the bug!
ps my car is for sale! one carefull family owner! lol

Mark, for a simple service you might want to try Alan J Ross motor engineer on Ashley Park lane, he used to look after Ricky Simpsons Testarossa years ago and does the MOT's on my 348 and anything straightforward. He's often got some weird and wonderful motors in there and really knows his stuff....

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated.

The one I was looking at only had lap belts in the back. That's the farce that the law is at the moment - my daughter cannot use a lap belt in the back but is perefctly legal sitting in the back of my Porker 944 without a belt as there are none fitted.

Ayyway, my good lady really put her oar in last night when I brought the subject up again. Might have to keep the 944 for now and graduate to a Mondial/456 in a year or so (need the 4 seats).

Cheers, Mark.
