Engine hoist/crane required
Discussion
What I used to do (a long time ago) was drop the subframe and engine from the body and then lift the front end up over the engine and push it back out of the way. Alternatively you and a friend either end of a scaffhold pole and a strap round the engine and you can lift it out. Obviously this depends on the size of you and your friend.

Well that was helpful G
If you are stuck, I have a friend who travels to Skye quite often and has an estate car, let me know.

Bigblock has the right idea thats what i did for 10 years and it is a lot easier trust me. Surely you have a few large mates to help with lift.VetteG said:

Thanks guys, Edinburgh and Glasgow a bit far but will keep you in mind.
As for lifting the car off the subframe, don't fancy disconnecting all the brakes, steering rack etc and the damn heavy lump still needs to be lifted off the frame.
As for big strong blokes, I used to do this regular with a mates Rally/Autocross Escort years ago but getting old and decrepid now and so are my mates. HIAB/forklift is an idea but then it'll need to stand outside for a while and at the minute the midgies are so bad I wouldn't want to work out there. (Outside all day today and it was absolutely crawling with the little b's).
There are times when a flip front comes into it's own for access but how I wish it'd been an Imp, used to lift these in and out by hand on my own!
Cheers

I'm going to need one in the not too distant future myself (for a slightly interesting project) so if I could make a pre-booking with someone for the loan of their hoist it'd be much appreciated.
In fact it'd be worthwhile having a look at both to see if they're suitable first. If a classic Corvette or Ultima happen to be around at the time that'd just be an incidental bonus
You may or may not want to use the kind with the gradual tanning effect...

More than welcome to come by, just make it a dry day then the vette can come out to play, Mattius#s Spitfire is usually about, given that he will never finish it, what am I saying... the vette is never finished! In fact it'd be worthwhile having a look at both to see if they're suitable first. PM if you want a look at hoist or car, if it's dry I'm always up for a quick run.In fact it'd be worthwhile having a look at both to see if they're suitable first. If a classic Corvette or Ultima happen to be around at the time that'd just be an incidental bonus
