Good morning Scot PH'ers!

Myself and a couple of other Thames Valley PH'ers are heading up to visit your patch at the end of June.

Roughly:
22nd Sunday, Evo triangle (Wales) and Lake District
23rd Monday, Livingston, start of 850 mile lap, to Applecross
24th Tuesday, Applecross to Ullapool to Inverness
25th Wednesday, Inverness to Edinburgh
26th Thursday, Edinburgh to Derbyshire
27th Friday, Alton Towers

If any of you can suggest places to stay in Applecross, Inverness, or Edinburgh that would be great (preferably homely B&B type places with parking).

And if any of you fancy joining us for any of the above sections do post on this thread and we'll sort it!

I live near Applecross and suggest http://www.applecross.uk.com/inn/index.htm - apart from that there are some B&B's. If you get stuck, e mail me as I have other options.

You may be interested in these photos taken eralier this month (mostly at Applecross) of another PH blat: http://www.stevecarter.com/hoon08/hoon08.htm

How many of you going (in what)? I'll look out for you.

Applecross Inn looks ideal - EDIT unfortunately fully booked though
Excellent photos!!
Not sure what yet, but at least a 130i and a Clio Sport.

Windermere to Applecross? About 380 miles, yeah could be a long day...
Yeah, a stop at Rio Prestige would be a very nice idea.

Just to give you an idea... I've done Shieldaig to Cockermourh in the Lake District lots of times. I guess it's shorter by 45 mins... but with no stops it generally takes 5.5 hours if you go the boring way (Perth Inverness) - so with a decent stop and going the pretty (longer way) i.e. via Fort William - it's a good 8 hours drive (but what a drive).

There are lots of B&B's in Shieldaig and one in Applecross listed on my website www.Shieldaig.org (Shieldaig is 45 mis from Applecross, but your second days drive is pretty short, so you might consider Windermere to Shieldaig then do the Applecross loop and onto Ullapool)

It's a nice idea but Sheildaig is actually slightly further than Applecross on our route, which would make the day even longer.
The route plan takes us from Applecross to Ullapool to Inverness in 295 miles (right up to the north coast and back down again you see).
So if we want to shorten the day we'll have to stop between Fort William and Applecross, perhaps somewhere like Shielbridge?

Ah - sorry... missed the route between Applecros via INV and ULL. That's also a hell of a long drive!

Beware the A82 in tourist season - surely full of caravans and tourists? Although that said, its far far far far better than the A9 for views and for a nice drive.

Doing Inverness back to Edinburgh is only a two and a bit hours drive as well, so you might want to move more driving into that day unless you're wanting to spend time in Inverness and Edinburgh or stop off on the way. If its a motoring holiday then consider moving eastwards on the return route, take in the roads across the grampians?

Yup, Inverness to Edinburgh you should take in the Lecht (A939) and Glenshee (A93) as a minimum. smile

Right, i'm amending the route so we leave Edinburgh on Friday morning and we skip Alton Towers.
So, Sunday night in the lakes, Monday night somewhere like Shiel Bridge, Tuesday night around Ullapool, Wednesday night around Inverness, Thursday afternoon and night in Edinburgh.
Thanks for the help so far everyone, keep it coming!

Unfortunately homely B&B's in Edinburgh get booked out very quickly in the late spring/summer. There are quite a few on my road (Glasgow Road)but I cant vouch for their quality, unfortunately. You could try the Western Manor house hotel, its smallish with off street parking or a bit more upmarket is the Marriot. Let me know where you end up and I will try to pop along with the vette.

If you're anywhere near Fort Augustus or Inverness on the 25th and interested in power boats, check out this link : http://www.roundbritainrace.co.uk/oban.htm
I should be up for a meet somewhere in the area if anybody else is there.
Cheers.
