It could be a number of things, if your talking about the rear mech, first check the adjustment of the limits, (the two small screws on the rear of the mech) , then as cables cost about £1 i'd replace the cable aswell, if it runs through any outer cables down the frame, check to see they are in good condition and the cable passes through freely and lube them up. failing all that buy a new mech for £30/£40 gets a good one.

If its a front mech i dont have a clue how to adjust them as i do downhilling and cant remember the last time i rode a bike with more than one cog on the front... but still checking the cable passes freely through any outers and isn't stretched is a good starting point. lube cures most things...

You should never need to adjust the mech-limits after the initial set up (front or rear mechs).

It sounds like the cable has developed some slack and needs tightening. Try using the little barrel adjuster on the shifter. If there's not enough there, just loosen then re-attach the cable to the mech, taking up any slack.

I agree about replacing the cables though. You might as well.

Just to confirm, turn it anti clock wise to help the mech move up the the bigger rings or clockwise the assist it move down. This applies to both the front and back..

As with all the comments above... change the cable. 5 mins job and a couple of ££.... will make your gears feel like now.

How old is the bike and has it had a lot of use? If it's new then it might mean one of the mechs need adjusting (two screws on the front mech), otherwise it's probably the cable as mentioned before streching. Turn the barrel adjuster on the front, if that still doesn't work then you could try loosening the cable bit at the mech, pull the slack through and tighten the screw to hold it in place. Otherwise go for a new cable.

cables i also agree. a sogging wet ride can cause a lot of friction in there. especially if you have entriely encases cables. routing of these is very important for lovely wet days, if it has sat for a while most certainly cables!

other note: deore front mechs, i have seen over a dozen of these sieze entirely the parallelogram pivots are made of really soft metal and bend, reducing and eventually stopping the motion...

pistonheads has its very own pedal powered section which is pretty good. Even better to see so many car nuts who ride as well smile
