I’m soon to become the proud owner of a second 166. It’s an MOT failure so I can’t drive it and Its in Oxford so I can push it!

I think my options are use a haulage company to deliver it.

Has anyone used one? What are there recommendations? How much will they charge? I feel that it could easily exceed the value of the car.

Or Rent a trailer form some body and drive down there and get it. (How cool would that be a 166 towing a 166!)

Would anybody here have a trailer they would be willing to rent to me?

Any other suggestions greatly received

Thank you

Stuart McIntyre

A few years ago I had a car on a trailer recovered from Ipswich to the Borders and it cost over £600. Don't ask, I'm still in denial.

I have hired a trailer from a local motorsport company for about £40 per day - then it's the cost of your fuel, assuming you've a suitable tow vehicle and are happy to do it.

I would think £1+ per mile would not be unreasonable for a recovery vehicle? (each way)

I don't think that would work, you'd have to check the max towing weight of the tow car, and have a license that allows you to tow above a certain limit (3500kg??)

I think the cops would be willing to stop you and ask some questions if they saw you on the road towing a 166 with another one.

Might be worth getting somebody to bring it back for you. Could be worth trying some of the haulage companies, i know a pal of my dads got his passat back from down south on the back of a low loader that was heading back up, could be worth a shot?

My drivers license only permits me to drive a trailer under 1/2 a ton. So I was going to ask my father to drive it back the car we would be using is a 2002 Nissan Premra.

The max weight at the tow bar is usaly about 50KG? (need to check the Nissan) So it would need to be twin axle trailer? These trailers exsits so there must be cars that can pull them!

Information greatfuly received.

Max towing weight of a Nissan Primera - 1500kg
Kerb weight of a 166 - approx 1500kg
Weight of trailer - 400-500kg???

The bigger car trailers are usually towed by vans and 4x4s, if you go to Knockhill the majority of stuff on a trailer is being towed by a van, with the odd thing behind a car but they are usually caterfields or Rage buggies.

I'm not trying to piss on your chips, just pointing out that you might get stopped by the BiB, and it wouldd be a right bugger to have to leave the car on the hardshoulder/services, coupled with points and a fine

Lovie's of Turriff were the most reasonable I found for transporting from the south to the north. Done a lot of 'prestige' motors too...

what happens if your car is stolen and found miles away in a non-driveable state?

Do you have to claim on your insurance for return?

Could you not say you had brought it home, then amazingly it was stolen and returned to it's original place of residence? laugh

I have a trailer that you can rent for a small sum to bring the 166 up on but beware the weight limit of the towing vehicle plus trailer. The trailer is used for my GTR and so is abour 15ft long by 6-7ft wide and it tilts. Mail me if interested.
