Hotel and restaurant advice in edinburgh
Discussion
I'll try this in here as well just in case
OK, me and SWMBO are heading to Edinburgh for a couple of nights on the the 2nd of January.
Due to her being a travel agent, she gets very good discount on hotel accomodation, however this has landed us with a problem, she doesn't know which one to stay in. So far the options are
Le Monde
Hudson Hotel
Apex International
Radisson SAS
Sheraton
Has anybody stayed in any of these that can give me an idea of what they are like (rooms, food, service, location) Current preference is the Apex, but she still doesn't know (bloody women)
Also, can anybody suggest a really nice restaurant? Looking for something in the city centre.
Plus, as i'm sure a large portion of her time will be spent shopping, can anybody reccomend any decent pubs that i can try and escape to during the day?
Cheers

Le Monde is also a bar / nightclub and can be a bit noisy.
I have been to lots of functions at the Sheraton and it has always been good. I have never stayed there though, but people I know have and they recommend it.
Also try Prestonfield if you can, magical at this time of year.
Slightly out of town though.

Decent restaurants, we go to Oloroso, Harvey Nichs 4th Floor, Atrium and a little place called Sygn (spelling?) do great steaks.
Avoid Le Monde, it's full of schemies and chavs these days thinking they've 'made it'. Go to Opal Lounge, Living Room or Lulu's on George St.
Sheraton hotel is good.

i'd avoid le monde, overpriced pretentiousness.
your paying for the fact your in george street.
Matt - it looks like you and I are in agreement - you were posting this as I was on P&P posting your paying for the fact your in george street.
"On the food front, personally I'd avoid all the George St eateries - depends what you like, but from my experience they're ultra trendy, noisy, the food's just middle of the road quality for very top of range prices and given the excellent 'individual' restaurants in Edinburgh I'd use them any day over the Living Rooms etc.
Just thought of another restaurant - french, but central - La Garrigue on Jeffery St - small and intimate - booking required"
Old and young minds think alike!!
If she's shopping then you will want to do the pubs in Rose street (between Princess Street and George Street) I can recomend The Abbotsford not far from the back of Jenners, very traditional, good beer and good traditional food. In the next block going to the West end you will Find Great Grog Wine bar, good for a glass of vino, soup & a sandwich type stuff. If you are down in Stockbridge then Hamiltons in Hamilton Place is good for ale and bar food.
I dont get back from our New Year celebrations up in Glenshee until the 2nd, but check my website for an email address, I could be about in the afternoon.

If you have a sweet tooth make sure you drop by Plaisir Du Chocolat (think they're on thistle st now) for the most fantastic handmade chocolates, cakes and pastries you'll ever taste, if you don't have time for sit in they do take away!
Also, I've stayed in LeMonde (St Petersburg room), it's one of the furthest away rooms from the club and bar so wasn't noisy in the slightest. The room was quite small but very, very cool with lots of nice touches and one of the most comfortable hotel beds I've experienced. I didn't eat or drink in the hotel so can't comment on the bar/restaurant.

Slightly off George, on North Castle St, but I'd say Time 4 Thai is a welcome exception to that accurate generalisation.VetteG said:

Wherezat then? The Sheraton is real classy and, if you can get a discount, why go anywhere else?
As for restaurants, try The Restaurant in the west end of town. It is on the main drag, close to Murrayfield and a few doors down from the independent Porche dealer (where the BMW showroom used to be). Unpretentious bistro that delivers first class grub in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere - we rarely go anywhere else if we are in Edinburgh (other than the Cavalry Club for a curry, that is...).
