What is the best route to incorporate Glencoe into a solitary drive up North?? Any rough times to complete the journey - i'm based in Edinburgh...

O and what are the chances of mobile speed camera vans? lol

Along the M9 to Stirling, then A84 through Doune and Callander to Lochernhead. From there the A85 up to Cranlairich. Picks up the A82 through Glencoe and Fort William up to Inverness.

How far up North are you looking to go - is it just a day out in the car?

Hell of a road at this ttime of year. Followed a gritter over it once in heavy snow. Scared the hell out of me but not suprising as I am a MacDonald.

This bring's you out on the A 82 to Fort William, the road will be quiet

What he said. Drivng through Rannoch Moor and the approach to Glencoe is beautiful.

Cameras:

the 2 main spots on the run through and just before Glencoe are:

North of the Bridge of Orchy hotel. Sits in the layby halfway down the long straight; you can't miss it.

In the layby just North of the white bridge past the Kingshouse hotel. Bit sneaky this one last time I saw it: it had an amber flashing light pod on top - to look like a workies van? surely not rolleyes

I've not seen them anywhere else for a long time.

Glad I read that! I have never seen them there before. Thankfully they have never seen me there either.

If you can spare the time and miles it is always worth going over the rest and be thankful.

If you do then watch out for mobile camera vans on A83 before Cairndow and also on A85 between Dalmally and Tyndrum. There is also an unmarked BMW 5 series on the A83 daily. There is also the occasional motorbike patrol on A82 / A85 / A83.

yes for a wonderful ribbon of road the place is covered in police. I'm from Campbeltown and lots of people from the town have been caught going over there. Well worth the drive on a nice day though.

Wall to wall sun this week - but watch for the ice - esp in places that never get the sun. As said, safe is king.

In case you missed... some highland roads - pics taken throughout this year:

Steve; Where's the 'Slow' picture from? That looks like a stretch I'll have to visit come the good weather.

The only traps I've seen on the A83 up to Lochgilphead have been the 30 straight by the railway station at Arrochar and the Dunoon junction (though they've locked the gates leading into the forestry for the last 2 weeks) and you really can't blame them for sitting at the Dunoon turn-off.

As for the bike cops there's been an unmarked maroon Honda sports-tourer (Pan-European?) knocking about for the last few weeks on the A83; once again you can't miss him - white Arai and dayglo jacket!

Mind that there's big roadworks at Inveraray for the next few weeks and there's still temporary lights on the Rest' due to the landslide.

edited to add: AND the laybys on the lochside... like KB I know only too well

I know the guy who does the speed traps there (my wife is in the Fort William CID) and he catches loads of people at both of those spots laugh last week he caught some fool doing 122 mph driving so they'll be getting banned for sure laugh another favourit spot to catch idiots is the long straight after the tourist layby that has the guy selling shite at a table (over looking the valley) .... he always catches people booting it down that section (the bit that is just after the highland council sign)

When you say 'some fool', what is your reasoning?
I ask because this may not be such a high speed considering the vastness of these roads.

When I was stopped for doing 86 the officer driving informed me that he had exceeded 135mph in order to catch me. Is he a fool?

"fool" because he was doing a speed that would (and will, LOL) lose him his licence if he got caught..... it doesn't matter if he or anybody else thinks it's safe to do that speed on those roads, what matters is keeping your licence surely? how far do you think he'd have travelled if a Deer jumped out in to the road in front of him? and that area is full of deer!
