Whats the rules in the Scottish Hillclimb Championship road car class regarding engine and drivetrian layout? The rules are pritty open but can the engine be at the other side of the axle? It would still be say, front wheel drive and front engined, or rear wheel drive and rear engined.
If it was engine-diff-gearbox would you get away with it engine-gearbox-diff?

Hi Graeme - not sure what you are planning, but you are probably out of luck. The regulations for engine and gearbox both talk about their needing to remain in the original position/orientation:
7.7.2 Engine
Make, type and modification are free, provided that the engine remains in the vehicle’s original position/orientation as manufactured, and is in compliance with current road traffic legislation and within MSA safety requirements. Attention is drawn to the MSA requirements regarding technical inspection of vehicles fitted with engines of larger capacity than originally fitted.
7.7.3 Transmission
Make, type, and modification are free, provided that the transmission remains in the vehicle’s original position/orientation as manufactured, and is in compliance with current road traffic legislation and within MSA safety requirements.

Bummer, was wanting to change my GWR IMP`s engine and gearbox for something modern and less expensive. Because i use it as my fun road car i fancied a bike engine in it, far cheeper and standard would have more power and a good gearbox. Only option would be going for a modern 16v 1400 car engine and hewland gearbox, thats lots more money!!
Talk to Drew Murray - he managed to get a bike engine in his Clan Crusader, and kept the original engine/transaxle orientation. It did work well, and I am sure he still has it. He is coming to the awards dance, so you could always buy a couple of tickets and talk to him about it there...

It could run in the modified class ??
The engine block must be the same as fitted to the original car in the Modified class, it would have to run in the sports libre class.I am sure "wight jr" knows that, and that is why he wants to get it into the road saloon class.
Its more of a sentimental thing, The upto 1400 road car class (1000 at the time) was the first class i raced in, Fintray was the track i got my first record at so i would like the car still to run in this class. Problem is, its ace fun to drive, i use it for the odd run to town and school, and i`m proud running around in a car made at this end of the country, but its only fun with the racing engine in and too low gear with the J/K box so i swap the engine and box for standard ones but its sooooo slow with these in. Would like to change to something modern and standard, Blackbird was the choice, at around £800 + or - this is lots cheeper than what we have tied up the engine and box we have now!
Drew's car has the blackbird motor driving straight forwards into a flipped over Sierra diff via a verrry short dirveshaft.
I believe that's why it is still able to run in mod sports rather than Libre which I imagine it would have to run if the engine was in the preferable position mid position.
Hopefully soemone who knows more about this kind of stuff can clarify that one regarding the regs.

I have already looked at doing it the same way as Drews, but did not think it would have been legal because the gearbox (being combined with the engine) would end up at the other side of the rear axle from what the layout should be, from front - back, g/box, diff then engine.
Anyway we now have a engine bought and just deciding on a gearbox to use.
