Greetings,

Please can you guys and gals north of the border advise somewhere nice to spend a few days in the Tiv. Not looking for tourist areas just peace and quiet and a tranquil setting. Ideal scenario is a village pub with some live celtic/folk music and a bar that stays open wink

We like the idea of a bit of 'pub hopping' with a slice of 'spirited' driving inbetween, quiet scenic roads (not goat tracks as the Cerb is set-up pretty low and the suspension is mainly set for track/fast road) however country lanes and twisties are not a problem.

Decent pub-grub or a village restaurant is a must and if the chance of a bit of canoeing/fishing is a prospect that would just about make things perfik.

Never been north of Glasgow before so please can you advise a good starting point with a nice pub, we can always use local knowledge when we get there.

warm regards,
Cooky

ps, the thought of jumping on a ferry to one of the 'islands' with accomodation is also very tempting

Isle of Skye sounds like just what your looking for.
No ferry to worry about, good pubs with lots of local music at the weekends, incredible scenery and the added bonus of some of the best driving roads in the UK.

For eating in the north of the island, you've got the Three Chimneys in Skinidin(great seafood)& The Old School Restaurant in Dunvegan.

I'm a Skyeman born and bred,so I maybe just a wee bit biased!

plan on setting out from home on the 15th or 16th (not sure when our eldest is back from Ibiza) and the head up north, Skye sounds like a nice place to head for, especially if there's a bit of music going on of an evening. Can you recommend a music pub with a decent breakfast for the first night?

Take a look at www.Shieldaig.org - I liked it so much I've moved here permanently. Music in the Bar on Friday nights (sometimes Saturdays) - and there are other villages with music on different nights scattered about. Nice B&Bs or a posh country house hotel at Torridon (all details on the site)

Also has these roads winkhttp://www.stevecarter.com/bestuk.htm

also see the thread below: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Nice one Steve,

That is exactly what Me n Mrs C are looking for, nice beaches too (weather permitting) a night or 2 in the big house seems the way forward too.

Plan on being up there for a week to 10/12 days depending on the weather and Mrs C's 'ladybird ladybird fly away home' (she doesn't like leaving the little ones behind even though there are two big ones to look after them.

Recon a visit to Skye is also on the cards and I'd love to do a bit of fishing from a nice quiet bit of beach and have a few pic-nics too.

Is there mobile 'tinternet up there? (with a GPRS card thingy that plugs into the laptop)

.....and do you think a Cerb will manage the roads?, if not then it may be a run out in the old Jag (at least the top comes down, but will need details of fuel stops as single figure returns are not uncommon wink

Do you guys have meets up there with a run out to some of the local hosteleres?

A night or two in the Torridon is a great way to relax. Food there is stunning. (Wi Fi throughout most of the hotel)

Cerb will be fine on the roads at this time of year. Wave if you see a black Aston smile

Scottish PH have meets - so watch out for yank muscle cars!

Sheildaig is fantastic, there's a lovely walk along the headland too if you head up the path at the side of the little school, can often see otters etc out that way.

Just back from a Weekend West Coast jaunt with my 360 spider. Stayed at Loch Torridon House hotel, fantastic. For a tighter budget try and get into the Inn at Applecross. The roads are to die for (not literally). I skelped the front spoiler off the deck a couple of times on the costal route to Applecross from Torridon, but that was my choice (they are single track but plenty of passing places). If you ca canny you should be fine. The roads from Dingwall to Loch Torridon, Loch Carron to Kyle & Kyle to Invermorrison are as good as it gets in the UK. As mentioned in previous postings, get over to Skye too.

well I'm not going to add anything earth shatteringly new here but I thought I'd chip in too to second the Applecross/Sheildaig/Torridon option. I'm just back in Edinburgh after 590 miles over three days staying in Lochcarron and Applecross. I'd say Applecross has better food options than Shieldaig TBH but I'll defer to Steve. The Applecross loop road over the Bealach just keeps you grinning and grinning for hours. The Inn is fantastic with good food and ale and a nice atmosphere.

I'd also echo the Loch Torridon hotel for something a bit special.

On the way back today I drove the Maserati Spyder from Lochcarron - Achnasheen - Beauly - Inverness - Granton on Spey - Tomintoul - Cockbridge - Braemar - Glenshee - Blairgowrie - Perth - Knockhill and home and if anyone can come up with a better route than that well, chapeau! The road over the Lecht is awesome. It's a few years since I'd done it and in the Maser I just laughed out loud (not load!) - so much better than the A9 and not that much of a detour.

Quick vote for the oldest Inn on Skye - The Stein at ....Stein with the Lochbay Restuarant also there, 50 yards up the road

Also the Eilean Armain Proban Bar worth a visit and the Hotel if you've got a few pennies too...just up the road from me

Funny how after these years I still cannot spell

Also the Ardvasar Hotel

all on Skye

and the Applecross Inn the best pub in Scotland and the Shieldaig Hotel too
(sorry Steve cannot spell that name either but recommend the Seafood Stew....
