Looking at moving to Edinburgh for work next year.

Will be on a decent amount (I think, correct me if I am wrong) of around 35-40k a year.

Basically would like to live in a trendy area, as I am basically yuppy scum.

But I am from Australia and don't have a clue, so all suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

The most desirable place in Edinburgh is the New Town and costs anywhere from £600 for a 1 bed per month up to £3k+. HTH cheers Ed

Just down the hill from the New Town is Stockbridge, still trendy but cheaper than the New Town. Of course if you really want to be trendy get a flat in the Old Town on the Royal Mile, the nearer the castle the better. Ramsey Gardens adjacent to the castle esplanade is about as trendy as you can get.

Almost always depends on where you are going to be working, given the fact that traffic/commuting is a real pain.

I lived just off the Grassmarket for 6 months (kings stables road) utterly horrible experience, every night till 3am there were crazy drunk folk around, figured I was young enough to cope, wrong.

Stockbridge is very cool, but has prices to match £175k + for a one bedroom is not uncommon.

If you want yuppy though, down at the shore in Leith has loads of new build trendy apartments’ with balcony’s and the like, plus lots of nice places to drink round there.

Just my 2p worth

Yep Leith is where I'm living & looking now (dossing at my dad's while I moved up from down south). I enjoy living there and Princes St/Queen St/George St etc are only 1/2 hr - 40 mins walk or 10 mins on one of about 4 bus routes.

Expect to pay at least 130-140 for a 1 bed flat in the Shore area, 175+ for 2bed. Avoid Platinum Point further down in Newhaven - rumours are the reclaimed land is sinking eek

No idea on rental prices though at the moment, although I may have to find out.

So much got to agree with that.
I have a mate who stays in, I assume, the same development. Seems an idylic place on a Sunday lunchtime. Apart from that is seemed a nightmare.

www.rettie.co.uk is there web adress. They are ok, what out for hidden fees!
Personally if i were you id go for NT, Stockbridge, West End or Hillside. Too many students in Morningside and Bruntsfield for my liking. I would also avoid Old Town and Leith but thats my personal preference! All IMHO. cheers Ed

Leith, Leith, or Leith. Left there six years ago and still miss it like crazy. Go back regularly to visit friends. Generally full of people that aren't "up themselves" unlike other parts of the city.... rolleyes

laugh Since when did "stuck up" or "full of themselves' get dumbed to "up themselves"? Sounds like folk having auto-erotic fun rather than being snobbish. [Not that I agree with the sentiment all Leithians are ideal citizens.]

In common parlance I think you'll find. Oh and people from Leith are called Leithers.

Excellent - all very good advice. Yeah, parking would be good (damm you lot have cheap cars)if at all possible.

Would be looking at renting for sure. Don't want to buy considering I'll be there for about 1.5 years (only 1 year working visa).

All my knowledge of Scottish real estate comes from Inspector Rebus novels, which really isn't much help.

Seriously? Within walking distance of your work...

Traffic in Edinburgh is AWFUL, and the council only make it worse. Lived there twenty years (pretty much all over - Southside, New Town, Stockbridge, Canonmills, Bruntsfield, and finally glorious Leith) so it absolutely depends on where your work is. Tell us where, and we can give some advice that's acutally useful.

Amazing how a small distance can make a big difference in quiet/comfort/facilities. Retties good, but try also Braemore Properties, and Grant Management.

Marchmont.

Overlooks the meadows and has a nice view of the castle. Very studenty, close to the Cameo, Filmhouse and Kings Theatre, amongst other things.

I prefer the Marchmont/Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh. Bit studenty but I see it as more "bohemian chic" Plus it's got lots of green leafy areas and is still close to the city centre.

The Shore in Leith is pretty yuppyish but just seems too far from the city centre (esp on a weekend night when you can't get a taxi!)

New Town and Stockbridge are good areas but can be full of pretentious tts whose Daddys have bought them a town house.

All imo of course.
