Well I left the flat in Edinburgh about 2pm today to pick up a mate from the far side of Glasgow. Got there are around 3 and fitted my viper to the 172, and had a look at the atlas for the roads up to Oban, as i have had the mini up there before...

Anyway, i was keen to take the car out for its first blast, and what a blast it was. Headed over the Erskine bridge, hung a left and headed towards Helensborough...

I then headed up towards Oban via Inverary to sample some of Scotlands finest roads and scenery, with a good bit of banter along the way.

As for the RS, it was flawless. The handling was on edge, however never oversteped the mark. The steering was agile but never felt underweighted so you felt complete attached to what direction and movement the car was going to take. And the engine was as i expected and sounded sweet with the viper.

I really needed this run to push the car and find its own individual limits, which i think i just about found.

In summary, the car made me smile.

Anyway a few pics, and a 2 minute vid - excuse the accents.

Helensburgh but wavey anyway

Great roads up that way. Often go up that way and stop for a pub meal etc. Loch Fyne Oyster bar just before Inverary also worth a visit if you like fishy stuff.
Everytime I've travelled between Inverary and Oban that road has been empty and great fun! thumbupdriving

One of your pics looks like its the Rest and be Thankful just after Arrochar?

I live in that area. I love the roads, and appreciate what I have!

Looking for somewhere to stay?

That is a regular route for me, though I usually head up Loch Lomond side. What is the road like via Helensburgh?

It does have some wonderful sections that allow you to safely develop an understanding of your cars behaviour. Unfortunately it also now has a regular selection of trafpol being sneaky and hiding behind things with speed camera's and no high vis vests.
the alternative routes can be excellent too. Either the A85 via Lix Toll (which was closed last night with a ridiculous diversion via Aberfeldy and no mention at Crianlarich) or the A82 from Crianlarich to Tarbet.

The roads around Helensburgh are generally quite fun however there are a lot of accidents particularly between Helensburgh and Cardoss, mailny do to entrances to 'estates' on blind bends, and people just going to fast.

However the A814 from Garelochead to Arrochar is a demanding road, infact my confidence lowers a tad whilst driving on it, had a moment there in the past, slid right across the road as I drove a rover 100 though a river which just happened to cut through the middle of a sweeping left hander. Managed to sort myself out and save myslef a sore one.

Other than that I would liken this road to a tarmac rally stage, fun but frightning

Nice video - the Rest and be Thankful is a top bit of road.

Shame you chopped it off at the start of the straight though!

Yes they did but before that it was used as a hillclimb. It was awesome. I drove up it prior to the scottish rally one year and even taking it canny it was scary.
