Went up to Knockhill this weekend to have a look at the goings-on. I went on Saturday and saw the trackday and some testing. It was very cold! It's taken me ages to edit down my pics (a possible downside of a DSLR?!) and below is a small selection.
If your car is not shown but you would like to see it, the chances are I do have a picture somewhere - just ask!

where's the photo of my car on its only [slow and mis-firing] lap

mad d@mn car

on the bright side, my current theory is that it's the condensor that's shot. So a £5 fix if that's the case.

Simon, I assume it was you talking and helping while we all commiserated with tvrolet, you should have lived up to your last post to me and said "what about the ride then?" Unless there's selfportraits on your profile it can be hard to put names to handles to faces. Hope to see and meet y'all again

Ha - yeh i was going to call that one in Tim, but I was trying to keep my mind on me driving the chim and didnt need any extra adrenaline ! Sounds odd, but i was trying to stay calm throughout the morning and knew a trip in the Ultima was not going to help.

Hopefully next time - if the offer is still open though

Gotta say - this was my 1st trackday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Its really great to feel the car's behaviour waxing and waning as the tyres / brakes heat up and then start to 'go off' a 5 or six laps later. I also understand some of the concepts that i have read about, but never experienced on the road. Changing down from 3rd to 2nd approaching the hair pin, lifting the clutch ( i am crap at heel-toeing )and hearing the rears lock as the engine 'spools up' is great ! Lifting off from an even throttle when mid-corner and feeling the rear twitch and squirm is also usefull. I try to use 'the system' to avoid doing these things on the road, but being able to see what happens when i do do them is invaluable.

I am also well chuffed that i caught a large ( felt large / probably wasnt ) rear end moment on my second shot at the damp hairpin during the warmup session !! There was a blue elise with a white stripe behind me at the time - anyone here??

Things that suprised me: not as scary as i thought it would be, the tyres really do take a bloody good hammering, didnt use much petrol or oil ( defo not trying hard enough ?!), i cant hear the sweet v8 very well with a helmet and the roof on ( see window open on above pic !).

All in - a good day !

I think I may - I'll need to get on to my own computer (where the images are stored) to check. I'll keep you posted.

Again, I'll need to check, but I must have taken a picture of every car there apart from the wee red Mini and the TVR racer above. I'll check my stocks for you as well, chimune.

Cheers, and thanks for the comments so far!
Iain

Sorry Chimune - you're the only request that I cannot fix - would you like a high-res copy of the one shown above? Please email if you do.

The rest - you've got mail!

Hi Dave,

I was using a Nikon D50 with the Nikon DX AFS Nikkor 55-200 mm lens, with a skylight filter on the end. I had it in the 'Sports' setting, and got better results than I did at Doune.

What are you using?

Cheers,
Iain

Hi Ian

I am using a Canon 30D with Canon EFS 17-85 IS USM and a Tamron AF 70-300. Looking to replace the Tamron but still trying to decide between a variety of lenses. Want to make sure I go for the best one suited for motorsports before I splash out some well earned cash.

Cheers

Any chance I could get a gander at the Doune pics?

Was it the event a few weeks back? Or the June one?

It was the Doune meet in September - there's a small selection of my pics here : www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=308095&f=118&h=0

If you have a car not shown, again, I may have a picture.

Cheers,

If you have Photoshop, select your background colour to be white, and increase canvas size by whatever you see fit ('canvas size' should be in a drop-down menu). Then change the background colour to black, and repeat again, by a larger margin than before if you want a 'stepped' look like mine above. Make sure you check the 'relative' box when you select the number of pixels you wish to make the border.

It would be useful if you have a lot of images, to create an action. There should be an 'actions' box at the side of your Photoshop - just click 'record' (it's a circle in a rectangle) then do the procedure. Then click on stop, and you action should be saved. To do borders, select this action that you have created, and image, and click play, and the border will be added in seconds.

If you have any problems, or would like me to go into more detail, just ask.

Cheers,
Iain
