Folks,

As per the title, is there anywhere that is a good focal point for jobs (specifically graduate or just past graduate level) in the sector.

I am a bit disillusioned with my current graduate engineer (been there almost a year) position tbh, so I suppose I am getting itchy feet when all I seem to hear about how alot of good places / organisations are finding it difficult to attract qualified people........

Any views / advice from people in the know appreciated.

Cheers
Ross

Alternatively try the contracting companies - don't go staff unless you have to in order to gain a foothold.

I would also try the Underwater Contractors also, the likes of:-

Acergy (ex Stolt)
Halliburton
Stena
SubSea 7

Check out the P & J Fridays, job section,

Good luck,

Agreed, Technip are also worth a shout........

w.r.t going staff or not. Tricky one - if you want stability then staff is the way to go.

Yes and P&J, (Pride and Joy) up here in Aberdeen means our local rag, ie P & J = Press and Journal.

I read a few posts the other day which refered to the P&J, and couldnt work out what our paper had to do with the post, now all is clear.

Bit like we all know what PMS is? offshore its a "Planned Maintainence System".

Ross,

What discipline are you? Speaking from first hand knowledge, Shell, ExxonMobil, Total, Oxy, Maersk, ChevTex etc are screaming out for people to come to the middle east. The money might not be quite as high as in the Caspian region or West Africa but the ilfe is a helluva lot easier and better.

The amount of motorsport in the area is a bonus. I watched the Grand Prix Masters and the Class 1 Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix last weekend.

cheers,

Kevin

Nah, I had 18 months in Nigeria and it was nothing like as bad as people said before I went. Had a few dodgy moments but nothing worse than being on Union Street in Aberdeen on a Friday or Saturday night

Well with the odd kidnap now and again, and one of my pals who was kidnapped, had an empty gun put to his head, and the nice coloured gentlemen clicked the trigger for him.............that made him change his skiddies.

Just cant stand all the hassel getting in and out, been there, got the T shirt, can do without it, put it this way, I'd sooner be in toon on a weekend myself than over there, at least you can neck a couple of pints o' heavy.

Oh and my pal had to pay a very nice gentlemen at the airport to be allowed to take his laptop OUT of Nigeria.

Kevin,

Not much of a discipline as such just now, but my current job is (graduate) project engineer, not that there is much of the graduate in it as its 'in at the deep end' right now with most of my work stuff that a fully fledged project engineer (that gets paid twice as much I might add) should be handling. I guess thats the way with alot of places right now......

Never really considered the middle-east tbh as I would have thought it was long term moving stuff which Iam not a big fan of right now. Wouldnt mind 2 on / 2 off.

As for west Africa, one of our guys recently had a popular soviet-era rifle pointed in his face, 200 dolla did the trick it seems.......
