From what I believe, though could of course be wrong, it was closed due to a lack of planning permission. Apparently the owners started using it for motorsport without planning, and when they were forced to apply, it was turned down because of noise protests.
As for former use, it was an electronic listening station for a long, long time. Apart from an event I helped organise just after the base closed, there have been no planes there for 40+ years IIRC.

Did Willie from Crail not buy part of it since he has noise issues down there now?? Must have picked that up wrong - shame as you say would have been good for clubs but I think the BA MC club we'rent too keen since they invested in resurfacing as CT says - I only ever went down once to watch 1/4 fiasco with 17year olds in 'hot hatches' doing 18-19sec quarters!!
