Tunnels in Scotland
Discussion
Have been looking with envy at all these southerners doing tunnel runs, so i started looking for some in north England / south Scotland. There appears to be:
The Tyne Tunnel in Newcastle
The Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow.
and thats it !
So anyone know of any good 'tunnel-like' places worth a visit?
Spoddy list of tunnel in UK found here btw:
Road Tunnels in United Kingdom

i use the clyde tunnel a lot, its usually mobbed but to make it interesting a hold my breath from one end to the other not sure of anymore tunnels though. Apparently it might be cheaper to build a Forth tunnel rather than a new bridge tho so maybe one for the future along with the proposed tunnel to Orkney
Last time I came up from Englandshire in the vette I missed out on the Tyne Tunnel because I stopped at teh services on the A1 just before the branch off to the tunnel. Coming out of the services there were cones which guided us onto the Newcastle bypass! Bummer!!!
There is that bit just North of Lochearnhead where you go round the bends, under the railway bridge with those high wall on either side.

Ha Vette man - thats caught me out before! was trying to turn off the a1 but had just filled up - bloody cones put me straight back on the a1 before i knew what was happening !
It seems the Toon tunn is the one. It must be 10 years since i been through it ( in a 950cc fiesta mk1 ). Now i have the chim ( no cats .) i fear i will have to revisit it !
Maybe just aim to tick all these suggestions off this year.
Cheers.

Yeh.......like
There is a short, narrow tunnel in Linlithgow - right up the back by the golf course. Teenagers used to race through it and up the hill behind it - the noise their little go - karts made was AMAZING!
The good thing is it's very quiet (ie. no traffic!) and if you are coming down from the golf course there's a straight run afterwards.

The narrow streets of Edinburgh are great if you have somthing that sounds good - New Town and the streets around the High Street/ Grassmarket/Cowgate are the best. The cobbles also make a hell of a racket if you have a big set of boots on. There is a good tunnel on the M8 in Glasgow as well. Must be more tunnels than that....
Narrow streets are nearly as good. Was in London in the summer in a 430, and the wall of sound following you down the street is amazing. That car turns heads even in The Big Smoke!

Admittedly Edinburgh's old town lends itself to this kinf of thing rather well. Especially the areas described.
Glasgow, which I know better, you have the stretch under the M8 at Dobbies Loan around Junc. 16 where you are under the motorway which can be fun, the Charing Cross underpass has tunnels in both directions (unique feature btw, Glasgow is the only city in Western Europe with a motorway passing right through the CBD), the obvious Clyde Tunnel, Argyl Street at Central Station has the Highland Mans Umbrella (I'm not going to try spelling it like I say it ), the next street down also features a tunnel the same size as Argyl Streets this is the street the Arches nightclub is located on, The Tunnel nightclub although not a tunnel is in an extremely narrow walled road with cobbles for good sound reflection.
Could also go all the way up then all the way back down Buchannan Galleries car park and see how many people have over sensitive alarms

Must admit i hadnt actually thought of Edinburgh much - which is daft seeing as i live there. I was warned about the cobbles in the Chimaera ( sounds like a std.. ) and sort of deleted the old town from my options ! Will give it a try in the sunshine, along with some of these other suggestions.
