Council say:

"Replacing collapsed bridge 'nigh on impossible' cost for council"

Strange, they can find money for various ego trips, fanciful wastes and Chief Executive pay rises....

Given one set of piers has collapsed bringing the two spans down I'd be more interested in them reaching into their pockets to have the other piers inspected and if necessary shored up; looking at the map the river has moved a lot since the bridge was built. It's for walkers and cyclists so the replacement structures could be much lighter and cheaper, perhaps the Sappers could be prevailed upon to use it as a training exercise.
