My nephew has just got himself a tidy little Seat FR, and is getting interested in cars. I was talking to him last night and telling him some stories about the times I used to go to Strathclyde Park when I was his age… which was 28 years ago to be fair!! Haha. Every Sunday night it used to be great, met loads of decent folk and there was always a good array of cars.

Are these things all gone now, what do the younger generation, who are into cars, do with themselves and their pride and joy of an evening/weekend??

They probably set up cameras and video themselves for the likes!

There are weekly meets at livingston asda car park. They just park up and look at each others cars.
All seems a bit tame now when cars with 300hp, mega stereos, massive wheels are just everyday humdrum now, nothing stands out.

Strathy Park... back in the day!

Different era now, car culture has changed dramatically so whilst there's still a healthy and very varied scene, the days of just hanging about the local car parks with your mates in assorted 90's stuff has long gone. My weekends usually consisted of nights out, hot hatch days at Knockhill or up the Crail then Kirkcaldy prom and the Sunday run through to Strathy park. Probably a good job camera phones and dash cams weren't really the done thing back then or I think half of Scotland would be up on dangerous driving charges!

Where I live, aside for the odd modified Fiesta ST the whole young team / car culture thing has died completely... cars are different, the social acceptance of cars as a hobby seems different too and the modified thing just isn't as accessible as cars have become very different to what we had when it was all black and white and we wore short trousers. I guess money comes in to it too, cars as a hobby can be quiet expensive... bu then most evening social events are. Now if I was going out every weekend and doing car related nonsense, like going through a set of front tyres on a monthly basis, I'd be in serious financial difficulty by the second week of the month.

Makes me sad to be honest, more so as I've a 7yr old and I wonder what it'll be like when he's old enough to drive.

Away to get my baffies on and rant at clouds...

I started driving late 1980s and almost all of my friends were into cars. Even those who were not that bothered knew how to fix them. As 17 year olds living in a rural area our cars were our key to a social life. To get out there, have fun and meet people you had to have a car and likely also be able to fix it yourself.

It’s funny though. You think the car scene has died but I’ve been to the breakfast meet at the Rhynd a couple of times and the place was heaving. Lots of young folk (and oldies). Loads of interesting cars that, despite spending much time driving the roads of Scotland, I’ve never seen out on the roads.

I'm a Rhynd regular (usually in my green '72 Alfa Giulia Super) and also go to the monthly Glamis SVVC & Dundee Museum of Transport meets when possible.

I really enjoy the social aspect - catching up with folk I already know, and chatting to owners of something which has piqued my interest.

I think it's great we still have such a wide variety of metal (& plastic) outwith the supercars which are way less interesting than something rare and obscure smile

We don't see these on the road much as they're generally folks' P&Js which get tinkered with and polished for the weekend events.

Long may it last! wink

The car club I'm involved with meet every Tuesday night in Forfar. Last night we cruised from Forfar to Montrose, then Johnshaven then Stonehaven. We have a wide variety of cars from the 1920's to moderns, yanks, hot rods and customs.
We do however discourage the pop and bangers.
