Hey all,

Just wondering any locations people can recommend to gather 15 cars for a drive out from Edinburgh.
Would prefer to avoid any busy carparks, and doesn't have to be too central, we'd be heading South.

Ps. I'm not local and just organising a drive back to Yorkshire area after a visit to Edinburgh.

Thanks

Any of the park & rides and the Gyle shopping centre would work

also it's going to be Saturday - so assume those places would be pretty rammed?

Are there any parks with large car parks?

The BP station at Mussleburgh at the end of the A1 just down from the A68 junction has a reasonable sized car park for a place to gather. Shop is ok for snacks etc.

For similar trips south the groups I am in meet at dreghorn services and then head down to Moffat via the a701.

The Gyle will have loads of parking too, even at that time.

I was just going to post the very same. It’s pretty big and should be quiet, and it is also well placed for either the A68/A1/A7.

I noticed they've got Edinburgh on the 10th/11th with London on the 11th. So presumably all the cars will be gathered somewhere you can have a nose around on the 10th before they set off on the 11th?

Yeh I’m not sure tbh… past flag drops seem to happen between 11-3… which means it’s just a slog to London… and not sure they’ll do such a boring route.

I’m assuming they leaving Edinburgh on 10th… and have stop on route somewhere

Is there somewhere I can check timings and route details for the gumball rally?

Last time they were here they used the A702 to travel south and I'd be keen to see them driveby this year.

To answer your original post though OP, I'd say IKEA isn't a bad shout as the car park is massive - just park on the right hand side furthest away from IKEA as you go in and there's a handy exit on that side too so should make it easier to get out.

We've used Dobbies in the past too, or specifically the Melville Inn, just off the A7 but most places you try at that time are going to be busy.

Dreghorn services isn't a bad shout as there's a fair bit of space on the right hand side as you pull in too where you can park up out of the way.

Yeh - I've actually picked Melville Inn - looks like a decent size car park, and everyone can possibly grab lunch there too. And works well for the route I've selected.

With Gumball - I'm assuming they'll leave Edinburgh on the Saturday (but dates say 10-11th) I can't see them leaving Edinburgh on 11th to get into London for the same day. I also can't imagine them missing some epic roads, all the way down - they probably have a night stop somewhere on route. Best bet to check on their Instagram account.

You're welcome to join our convoy (only 4 cars at mo) if you want - but we will be staying Penrith on the Saturday. We'll then be doing Sunday to the Motorist. I'm just going to assume the flag drop takes place on Saturday midday - based on past events

I think the last couple times the Edinburgh to London leg has been one day - they tend to cover big miles on each day, and because of this it's mostly motorway stuff. I think it's an assemble on the 10th, usually parked up on the road somewhere (was Regent Rd back in 2016) and depart early the 11th.

ah ok fair enough. yeh just thought the flag drop was a bigger event - that takes a good few hours before they all setoff.
Unless the flag drop parade is Saturday - and then Sunday they just drive out. Any idea when they'll release actual details of what and where it'll all happen?

Appreciate the invite but, after checking dates, I've realised I'm away at a car show that weekend so will miss all of the display - gutted!

Hope you get a good day for it, Dobbies breakfast is actually ok too.
