Disaster! Morton's Rolls Go Bust

Disaster for the west of Scotland and Glasgow anyway. The essential morning roll company gone bust.

Back in the 80s when their bakery was in Crow Road I worked Nightshift nearby. Used to get the rolls fresh out the oven

That said the rolls were never quite as good when they switched from air cooling on huge racks to some sort of huge fridge that speeded it up.

Not just a disaster for west of Scotland. Morton’s are the roll of choice in central as well. Crispy roll and bacon (with the obligatory fried tattie scone) hard to beat. Sad times, particularly for the employees obviously.

Was there not a recent story that the directors were a bit on the shady side? Funded by crime?

Indeed a very chequered past, all sorts of alleged skulldugery, HMRC fraud, money laundering, accountants struck off, drug dealing, though looks like nothing ever really stuck, maybe it's all come home to roost now though. I really struggle to comprehend how a company that sells so much product across the country could face financial failure unless some of the dubious conduct allegations are founded.

Yeah I'm led to believe the current owners of Morton's Rolls only actually bought the name ( and possibly IP) when the last lot went down the tubes..

There were incidents of "roll wars" around the Coatbrifdge area around that time too

I was never a fan of them to be honest, much preferred the softer type or less well-fired variants

McGhees are still making crispy rolls, and I'm not sure I (or many) could tell the difference between them or Mortons?

yup freshest rolls ever for the square sausage
At the time I lived in Strathcona Drive, Backed on to the bakery. I remember the smell of fresh rolls, the baker's football matches at 2am & the Aston Martin Lagonda that the owner drove.
