Hi all,

I’m potentially looking at an engine swap in a Mk1 Golf. Current engine only puts out 70hp and I’d want something a bit more modern (1.8t or the like)

This is not something I would underake myself so wondering if anybody had any recommendations of garages who have done this sort of thing before, in and around Glasgow?

Thanks,

Scott

Ecotune in Hillington would be worth a chat. I'm not saying they do engine swaps, but they certainly do extensive tuning of the VAG range, and are very highly regarded, with several 1/4 mile records of their builds.

Even if they don't do engine swaps, I imagine they know a man who can.

Good luck with it, and please keep the exterior period as you can, steel wheels or rims would be a bonus. I'd love you to surprise a few of the "point to prove" Seat FR brigade on the M8.

I’ve just messaged Ecotune actually. I’m in Paisley so they’d be ideal as they’re just down the road.

100% will be keeping it relatively period correct. I plan to daily drive it so might need slightly modernised

Excellent, good luck with it, PHs name and shame policy stops me warning you Directly wink about any cowboys around the Paisley area that claim to do engine swaps. You may have to travel if you strike out with Ecotune, there used to be good performance VW mags back in the day, hell max power would have given you a steer.

Hard to find genuine marque specialists these days, always have a soft spot for mark1s, one of the lads had the cross spoke mk2 BBS alloys on his, I'm sure he swapped them (I do mean a roadside trade) from the Pirelli ones in a fit of madness, might even have had to use spacers. Same fella chopped up a Mk1 RS2000 "as it wasn't worth anything"...
