I thought me misspelling 'whisky' would get your attention wink

Arranging a friend's birthday later in the month - can anyone recommend a place to do this?

I used to be a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (they do their own bottlings, large range, famous distilleries but "unbranded") and they have bars/tastings both in central Edinburgh (Queen Street) and down at Leith (short taxi/bus ride away). They do let in non-members (at a higher price) and I see do tastings, so worth a look.

I didn't actually go that much as the venues were becoming increasingly busy (letting in all the non-member riffraff wink ) and cancelled my membership a couple of years ago.

The knowledge of the staff in the members' bars I found variable when I used to go, but I imagine it needs to be up to scratch for separate paid-for private tasting events. Would probably be a good starting point for what you are looking for though.

Not formal tasting, but a brilliant range of whisky (and whiskey!) can be found here:

Also a good food menu too, booking is essential.

The Johnnie Walker experience is brilliant (contrary to the comment above) - the high street needs more places like it. Great tour and 3 drinks included so overall good value. It also has a rooftop bar with good views of the castle and down towards Scott Monument. Again, tour and rooftop booking advised.

Just go to Deacon Brodies Tavern and try one of everything they've got. Take a LOT of money and pre-book an ambulance.

Kays bar Jamaica Street. No nonsense locals bar. One of, if not the worlds greatest authority on whiskey is a regular.
