I was heading home to Aberdeen from Nottingham today, the last section of which was the A90 from Dundee. About 10 minutes north of Dundee I see flashing lights behind me, an unmarked BMW. They got stuck behind a Hilux in lane 2 that apparently hadn't noticed them and took some time to pull over, the cop car turned out to be a 1-series, medium grey.

A few minutes later, some more blues and twos but this time a silver mk3 SEAT Leon. A short while after that, either another silver Leon, or the same one having doubled back and turned around again. The same or another silver unmarked cop Leon passed me somewhere near Stonehaven.

These are not the sort of cars I've seen as unmarked police vehicles, could they be some other service? Anyone got any idea what was going on this afternoon, between about 4 and 5pm?

Princess Anne was in the edinburgh area - maybe related ?

Also could be cops on training - A90 is relatively lightly trafficed dual carriageway. so open for doing training without much interference from the public

Possible I suppose, just the odd choice of cars made we wonder what was going on. They did seem to be driving a bit oddly too, I think it was the BMW, when he was obstructed by other traffic, at one point was straddling both lanes but then moved right over the far right of lane 2, as if seeing if he could get past on the right hand side. There was a bit of traffic about, given the time of day, would seem a bit odd to have rookie traffic cops on training when there is some commuting traffic about.

Derbyshire use the unmarked Seats in a variety of colours. They also have a blue M140 as well.

Seems they are pretty effective choices for unmarked cars based on your surprise.

Fire marshall/chiefs can have their own cars fitted with blues and toos. Was there a big fire today?

Fair points, I didn't see anything saying Police, Fire or similar on the cars, just the lights. All the known unmarked plod cars around Aberdeen seem to be estates, usually BMWs or Volvos and usually with fairly powerful engines. Not aware of any big fires etc but yeah could have been something like that perhaps.
