There is a proposal to upgrade the Tarbert to Inverarnan stretch. Sadly they are going for an upgrade of the existing road which will involve delays and closures during construction and result in a less than ideal end result due to compromises caused by the terrain and working around the adjacent railway. For example how many years did the upgrade of the 300 yds past Pulpit Rock take?

This blogpost proposes a higher alternative which would have major benefits in a better line. Fantastic views. Removing traffic noise from the loch to some extent. Not involving road closures during construction. And leaving the old road as a cycling/walking route. Perhaps with the option to reopen as a bypass in case of issues with the new road.

Given the arse the govt has made of the A83 Glen Croe I do not think this propoasal will see the light of day. Wasting hundreds of millions on failed ferries and failed prosecutions is OK. Solving the issues of arguably the worst quality A road in the UK in terms of traffic volume are not a priority.

How long was the section at pulpit rock controlled by lights?
I may be deluded but I think it was on lights as far back as 1987?

Also, while I'm whinging, every time I go north at the new section at pulpit rock I am staggered that they spent all that money and managed to build it with an unsighted tightening bend!

Looking at the debris on the inside I suspect quite a few drivers have been caught out.

I am old enough to remember driving on the old road beside the Loch at Firkin point.
I suspect I will have hung up my driving gloves before the Tarbet to Ardlui section gets sorted.

Just had a quick read through the proposals and I am glad I don't have to come up with the answer of balancing roads and environmental impact and tourism.
You can't please everybody.

No you are right. A major north south trunk road was single lane light controlled for more than 30 years.

Which is put in perspective when you think the Victorians managed, in 5 years, to build a railway through the same terrain without modern construction machinery.
