Hi,

Taking the nippers to Edinburgh next Sunday coming back on Tuesday.

Was going to take the train but looks like industrial action is on the cards so driving instead.

Been many years since I was patient enough to drive into Edinburgh so had thought of parking at the Ingliston park and ride and taking tram in but it looks like I can't leave my car there overnight, or at least the website's not too clear - is this the case?

Any other reliable / recommended alternatives?

Thanks

Have left my car there a few years ago for 4 days whilst on a trip to Germany to a car show , no ticket ..but to be fair the guy I went over with was a manager with Lothian buses and said if ticketed he would sort it .

Personally, coming from that side, I would probably park somewhere like Ravelston and wander in. Buses are rubbish.

Edinburgh buses are not pish. They are reallly good for getting about edinburgh. A car in the centre of town is pointless. Check where the controlled parking zones end and park just outside them and hop on a bus.
You see cars in the park and ride all the time that are left overnight. I dont know if they are ticketed though.
Another option is to leave your car in sighthill industrial estate near the car garages by the bottom and get the tram in from there

Re Lothian buses ..I believe they operate the newest fleet in the uk ..certainly a lot nicer that First buses in the west where I come from rarely use public transport even with a free pass .

We used the Omni Centre for a week recently. We were staying round the corner at The Apex Waterloo Place.
We were expecting to be going out of the area for 2 or 3 day trips but that never materialised so we finished up paying £120 for the week with the hotel discount for the car to sit there. With hindsight we’d have got the train.

Oldest bus I have seen in recent times on the regular fleet is a 2009 (59) plate. They do have a historic fleet too and quite a few private reg plated buses

The omni and all the multi storey car parks in town are obscenely expensive. Parking on the outskirts and getting the bus in is by far the cheaper option. Even drive in drop your bags at the hotel and move the car to the outskirts for the rest of your stay.

Meh, this is PH, so I'd put expense after convenience, time saved and security of the vehicle.

Park over the bridge at Halbeath, and get the bus from there, no issues with leaving the car or any charges.

I and friends have used Hermiston park n ride.Sometimes leaving cars for a couple of nights with no issues. Pals left theirs from Tues to Sat with no issues while we went cycling in June. Bus is good into Edinburgh and on top of a double decker would be a treat for me as a kid

To be fair, although pricey I did feel the car was very secure in the Omni Park and it was no problem to nip down to it from the hotel a couple of times during the week...and a quick easy walk to the car with our luggage when we booked out.

You can park in some of the streets beside Cameron Toll (opposite the Travelodge)

It's a nice enough area and no zones and it's less than 10 minutes in to the centre.

Got my in-laws visiting and we are in Glasgow... as the train is getting extortionate I was thinking of driving to the outskirts and bus/train/tram(?) into the centre.

I am not a regular visitor to edinburgh other than the fringe which is always an inebriated train in and out... so wondering if any could give some advice on where they would park heading into the city from glasgow?

thanks

Hi - thanks for all advice. Parked at Hermiston Gate in the end, kids enjoyed double decker into the city!

Must be about 4 or 5 years since I've been into Edinburgh properly and I have to say it's gone downhill a lot in that time, litter and graffiti all over the place, Princes Street was never as great as it could be but is now just a complete disgrace - with so much going for it but it feels like it's just being left to rot, Leith Walk is a building site, the Royal Mile is now swimming with shops selling vastly over priced cashmere and kilts, puddles of vomit at regular intervals up and down the Royal Mile, is there never not roadworks on North Bridge, George V Bridge feels derelict.....I could drone on like the middle aged grump I am but it seems like there's no pride being taken in the city anymore - lap up the tourist pound for as little effort as possible.

And what the fk is the St James Quarter all about?

I say this as someone who was born and brought up there (well Leith!) and loved what the city used to be...sad to see it like this.

I know - I've not been in Glasgow since the first lockdown kicked in and it was in need of some signficant TLC back then - I'm assuming the bits the high and mighty's see will be painted and polished to within a inch of it's life.
