A78 Speed Signs

Hello,
Any other PH'ers regularly travel on the A78 near Irvine?
In the last few weeks the authorities have installed large signs that flash up 'SLOW DOWN' if a vehicles speed triggers them.
I have travelled past them a few times now and the reaction from other drivers seems to be to panic and slam on the brakes if the sign is triggered. Even if they are not the vehicle that's triggered it.
Travelling the A78 yesterday and at one of the locations of the signs there was evidence of a crash - skid marks, barrier damaged, etc.
Just curious if anybody else has seen them and what their thoughts are.
