Unfortunately... or not unfortunately I guess as it was my doing but got caught speeding just before Christmas. A90 out past Millar & Carter towards the bridge, I was sure it was a 50mph limit but it's a 40mph limit I guess due to roadworks. First time I'd been on that bit in months... got caught doing bang on 50mph.

Owned up and have the returned letter stating I'll be getting 3 points and a £100 fine for my error. Again, fair enough that's just life. However, seems Police Scotland are still in the 18th century as it's payment by cheque or postal order via the post, license to be included. Again, that's fair enough but I don't have a cheque book.

I've searched the web but to no avail and the information on said letter is as short and sweet as humanly possibly therefore can anybody advise if my wife can send a cheque for the sum of my dear old mother or does I have to be in my name? No biggie, worst case I'll need to brave the local Post Office to get a postal order.

Just seems a bit... outdated... but I digress.

Cheers

I would have thought as long as it's clear when sent that it's clear what the cheque is for (reference number, offence with date, your name etc) then they don't care who pays, they just want the money.

Waits to be corrected...

Sure you can still get a cheque book from the bank. You just have to request one. RBS even do them in left handed(stub at other end) .

I imagine that must be some sort of Covid restriction. I landed myself with the same end result as you about 18 months ago and I was able to pop in to an office at the local courts and pay the fine there and then in person. I didn't have to send away my licence either, so that's odd as well?

It's a few years since I've had a ticket, but when did it go up to £100?

I lost the plot with the court last time I got done, as they sent my licence back in the normal post (not signed for etc) and it got delayed somewhere. Clearly Royal Mail's fault, however my argument was if it had been lost the court should pay for a new one as they didn't use secure postage. Turned up in the end

To be honest, I was quite surprised at how vague the second letter was, more so as far as "the next step" was concerned. Very much a small tear off slip... sign, return with a cheque or postal order including your license to a PO Box address in Glasgow.

No contact number or alternatives available however a quick Google suggested that any court could process in person but this certainly wasn't suggested on their letter. Perhaps yes, the current Covid situation has removed that option. I'm slightly miffed it must be said, first points in nigh on 10yrs and part of me had thought a speed awareness course may have been an option... but again, in Covid times I doubt such courses are running?

But what's done is done. My mistake so I'll take it on the chin. Have done as requested, wife write a cheque (with reference / VRN etc on the reverse) and I took a few pictures of all the required bits and pieces then sent it off. However sat here thinking I should have sent it via registered post. Insurance renewal is due at month end, looking forward to their comical increase thanks to my new criminal status!

Thinking back, first time I was nabbed was doing nigh on 90mph on the M90 and that was courtesy of a rapidly closing Volvo T5 way back in 99. 3 points and £60 but paid in person at Perth court. I was then caught by a covert camera on the A303 doing almost double the limit, that when I was young and stupid. Do not pass go there, summons to Taunton but wrote a pathetic, cringeworthy letter and got 6 points and £100 fine for my troubles. Hands up for those, I was being an idiot but this one is frustrating as I was absolutely sure it was a 50 and was nabbed doing exactly 50. Unfortunately it was a 40.

Should've gone to Specsavers!

So when I got my NIP through it was just before my renewal, by the time it was all done and dusted I was into the next year's policy. Fast forward to the next renewal (last year) and my premium was... Just over £100 less than before. No idea why, someone theorised that first-time speeders on 3 points are likely to drive more carefully (I know I do) but that paid for the speeding ticket and then some.

Galling how many simple 10 MPH reductions there are out there recently where the lower limit is extended out from a built up area

Just had it all completed... SP30 and 3 points / £100 in total and on the subject of insurance, mine renewed on Monday there so rang them to advise and it's gone up from £301 at renewal to £327 with the points. My excess is now a rather whopping £750, up from £250.

I couldn't be arsed ringing round trying to better that, so I'll run with it but oddly I also updated my wife's policy where I'm a named driver. Same company but as hers renewed on the 2nd of December and the offence was the 4th of December, they advised there would be no change until next renewal.

I queried that several times but he was adament that it would make any difference until next annual period and not did they update the driver details on the certificate.

Just when you think you understand car insurance companies, they go and confound you again smile When my renewal came in £100 lower as above, I actually rang them to check it was all correct, had the points and offence declared, made sure they hadn't slipped a whopping excess in somewhere etc. Still stunned as to why it was so much cheaper.

I also rang them at the time once my licence was endorsed etc. to declare it then, thinking that was the responsible thing to do. They made a note on the policy but said it made no odds until renewal so I was expecting to get bent over but no... See what happens this year, I guess.

When I was about 24 I got 6 bonus points in a day... 37 minutes apart, actually. 2 x SP30. My insurance stayed the same at renewal but the girl on the phone thought getting two tickets in under an hour was hilarious. I can't say that was my reaction to it. Bloody camera vans.

Just to inform anyone not local (and the majority of the Locals too)

The 40mph limit in this location was extended toward Queensferry by about half a mile in both Directions a while ago. Probably due to the imminent redevelopment of the Army Site for Housing.

Normally the usual scamera-van is parked well inside the 40 limit heading into town, but recently they have been doing checks on the Northbound side, as the 40 was extended from just at the Miller and Carter to over the Hill past the new bridge.

Very few people take notice of this and go for it in the usual place where the 40 used to become a 60 - Be Warned!!! the locals are complaining about it, and I'd expect the Van to move to the Bridge to monitor the Northbound lane soon!
