Can't have people enjoying wide empty roads now can we... interestingly the fatalities they mention had nothing to do with speeding...

Is it not the case that proving a car was "Speeding" in an accident is rather hard to do It is just a common misconception that all serious accidents are assumed to be "speeding" cars.

Well, that's decided where I'll take a break on the journey up! After Lix and before the Green Welly stop.

Interesting article on BBC this morning 27% (749 people) of those killed in cars were not wearing seatbelts.

Maybe cameras catching those not wearing seatbelts are needed :-) Big brother is coming

One of the few places between Rannoch Moor and Stirling where there are good long well sighted straights for overtaking. With a bit of luck most will be paranoid and sit slower than usual so I can still overtake without breaking the average.

According to DoT statistics, speeding is a contributing factor (not even the main cause) in only 5% of accidents. If you then remove certain criminality from the equation (stolen vehicle, driving under the influence etc...) the percentage becomes negligible.

True, it is hard to prove that someone going a handful of miles over the speed limit, was speeding. However, when you consider that almost everyone goes above the speed limit to some degree on every journey, again the idea of "speeding causes accidents" becomes even more unlikely.

The problem is that it is too hard to catch and fine drivers for the top causes: driver distracted, poor driver judgement, poor pedestrian judgement, loss of control of vehicle, road conditions etc...
But speeding is easy and quantifiable. You are either speeding or not.

The interesting thing about average speed cameras is that, whilst they reduce the number of fatalities, they actually increase the number of accidents whenever they are put in place. the reason for this is that people are either paying more attention to their speed and not the road or on autopilot with cruise control on. This fact is rarely advertised for obvious reasons.

Another interesting fact is that the restricted and de-restricted sections of the autobahn have the same accident rate. The same goes for dual carriageways in the UK that have a 70mph and 50mph speed limit.

Being an "ancient" motorist bring back traffic cops

In good old days they were enough about to spot a lot of the issues we have on roads nowadays, no seatbelts, using mobiles, bad driving. uninsured/untaxed drivers, stolen cars and yes even speeding drivers

A pull, a walk round car, breath check tax check Insurance check and a lecture often was enough to keep you on your toes and be wary

I recently went from Glasgow to Coventry and back, passed by 2 traffic cars both at high speed going somewhere ahead of us on M6 otherwise no visibility of police presence. I could have probably gone as fast as I wanted and got away with any driving offence you care to mention.

There's been a lot of prattle about this on the local FB forum.
There should be cameras to pick up those bloody motorhomes, many with foreign regs, travelling at 35mph in convoys of up to 16.

Trouble is up here, if it's over a short distance you know where you are but if over say 10 miles, your speed will go up and down so much you'll have no idea what the average is. Av speed cameras work fine though roadworks where a 50 is mandatory but up here its bloody stupid, which is why they'll be bringing them in.....

I'll agree with them when they invent a camera that picks up someone on the phone, texting, on drugs, tailgating, not paying attention, bald tyres etc. Until then it's a big NO.

See there was a fatality here at the weekend, several around the country also.
Does anyone know where on the road the accident happened?

I feel the bit that runs next to the loch with stone dykes on both sides of the road, overhanging trees and the bad bend is always a potential accident spot.
