Mazda 3 Diesel Remap

Morning,
I've just bought a Mazda 3 and its turned out to be not quite as economical as I had hoped, in fact only marginally better than my Focus petrol. It's the 2.2 Sport Nav diesel auto.
At the moment it's only returning around 45 MPG on my weekly commute between West Lothian and Norrh Yorkshire which is around 170 miles one way, 40 of which are single lane roads and the remainder motorway.
Apparently this is normal MPG for the model but someone has suggested a remap can raise this to the high 50s.
Having just spent 11k on the car and having never remapped a car I'm a bit cautious.
I just wondered if anyone had any first hand experience or recommendations for a garage that can help?
Do they actually work and will they affect the reliability of the car?
