I'd say you were right. He's not one of the established (i.e. having premises and website etc) Kintore traders.

He seems to get stuff from Dunecht 4x4 if they don't want to sell it - know anything about them? They were quite helpful when I spoke to them.

Yes, Dunecht 4x4 are very well established, and good to deal with. Loads of stock and high turnover, and always busy on a Saturday. They do take trade-ins but don't seem to sell them on themselves so that story could be true.

Thanks Ken, I had found that. More info has come to light which means I shall pass which is a shame as, on the face of it, the car is what I wanted. I need absolute confidence dealing at that distance.
