Free parking in Edinburgh for a few weeks?
Discussion
I am thinking about driving down from Aberdeen and leaving the car in Edinburgh for a few weeks over Christmas/ new year while I fly out to Portugal.
Just looking for someone with local knowledge that can point me in the right direction for somewhere to dump the car for free in a safe area that has easy access to an airport train/bus/tram or a cheap taxi ride.
I would just get a train or bus from Aberdeen from but the timings don't work out and I would need to go the previous day and book a hotel, which isn't ideal.

There is nowhere free near Edinburgh airport that is safe for that length of time. You may get lucky, or you may come back to your car broken into or vandalised, unless you know someone and have them keep an eye on it unfortunately. There is free parking on the residential streets at ratho and kirkliston and the likes but locals object to cheapskates taking "their" limited spaces and it's not uncommon to see mirrors kicked off and key scratches or tyres slashed.
http://www.lowcostairportparking.com are cheap but they don't show up on the comparison sites I have tried.

You can park on Murrayfield Road at the side of the Murrayfield Hotel. No problems when we go to Edinburgh and leave the car. We always park opposite the hotel so no one is upset. Just don't park under the trees, the birds are particularly well fed.....
Get a taxi to the airport or walk to one of the nearby bus stops on Corstorphine Road where the 100 bus service stops which goes to and from the airport. Note, it doesn't stop at every stop though. The one between Kwik-Fit and Murrayfield stadium is only a short walk.

Thanks for that too.
My options so far.
Bus from Aberdeen, hotel in Edinburgh and bus to airport approx £100
Drive my car and get Cheap airport parking approx £110 plus my fuel
Cheap Car rental including 'one way fee' and fuel. Approx £100
Just to get to the bloody airport !
Try pricing up either a hotel that will allow you to leave the car or one of the hotel + parking deals on the airport's website. I got a decent deal in July, a night in the Holiday Inn at the zoo and 4 days in the short-stay directly outside the terminal for £120, it might be cheaper than you expect. I got it from here - http://airporthotels.edinburghairport.com/?agent=E...My options so far.

Train down to Edinburgh Gateway and then tram to the airport or bus to Ferrytoll park and ride then 747 bus link to the airport?
Or...
Drive to Ferrytoll, leave the car there free and then 747 bus to airport... operates 24/7 I believe and seems secure, manned and covered by CCTV plus far enough out to detract the local scallys...
http://www.ferrytoll.org/
Edited to add: The 747 bus link to the airport also covers Inverkeithing train station so that may be another option.
