Thinking of flying to Glasgow and hiring a car for three nights to get a taster of the beauty on the west coast. Current thinking is July ish, but open to advice.

Also looking for cheap places to stay and eat and even a basic list of must see's.....

Go earlier, May-June.

Quiter roads, good chance of better weather, fewer/no midgies.

Hotels/B&B's/Hostels will also be quiter and probably cheaper.

Are there any particular places or roads you want to visit?

A very big thread in the 'Roads' section well worth trying to read through, has lots of route suggestions and recommendations for places to eat and stay.

Have a look at the North Coast 500 site for ideas, the west coast there is stunning.

A must visit location for me would be Applecross.

Thanks.
Looks like Inverness airport would make more sense, and then base ourselves at Applecross or Shieldag maybe ?

I'd go for flying into Edinburgh or Glasgow and then head up the west coast. It's all breath-taking. You'll never see it all in one trip but it will 'wet your appetite' and you'll be back and back and....

I thought Glasgow looked a longish drive to Applecross for example.
Inverness is 2 hours according to route planners.

20 minutes from Glasgow Airport and you're at Balloch, the start of great to awesome roads along the West Coast area. I would know, I live there!
It's the roads on the way to Applecross that are not to be missed.

Current thoughts are now fly to Glasgow 27-30 April and stay somewhere like the Torridon Inn or Applecross.
