Places to visit/stay around Skye/Lewis and Harris
Discussion
We have booked a campervan for 2 weeks in July.
The last time we had one, we went to Dornoch, across to Gairloch then down to Aviemore.
This time, we plan to go to Skye, then get the ferry across to Lewis & Harris and visit some friends on Bernera.
I would love to go over Applecross as well, but I am not sure if the road is suitable? It is a smaller 4 berth van this time rather than the larger 6 berth we had last time, with smaller roads in mind!
Any places you can recommend to a)visit, or b)stop over for the night?
You cannot beat personal recommendations so thought i'd ask in here again as the last time I asked I got some great recommendations.
Cheers,
Steven

I doubt you would have an issue getting over the Bealach na Ba. If anything I would be a bit more concerned about some of the roads in South Harris which just seem to be painted on top of the rocks, but even then I wouldn't worry about it unless it is some Winnebago behemoth. Admittedly my old man struggled to get his X reg Master Camper over the Bealach na Ba but that entirely due it's asthmatic non turbo engine getting a bit overheatey.
If you're up there at the right time I'd recommend visiting Stornoway during the Hebridean Celtic Festival, which is around mid-July. I was up there last year and it was bouncing. Even if it isn't really your thing the atmosphere was great. I didn't get to enjoy myself properly though as I was working unfortunately. Oh and visit Cameron's for fish n chips.
If going to Barra, I recommend this site where we stayed last year on our first ever tent holiday.
The toilet block and facilities put my own home to shame!

Horgabost campsite is great, on the beach in Harris. Croft 36 at Northton has an honesty shop, seafood, baking and last time I was there also did hot food, including deliveries to the campsite! Also there is the Temple cafe. If you like a bit of windy road driving try going round the east (bays) side from Tarbert to Rodel, or the stunning road down to Huishnish beach from Ardhasaig. (Remembering to let locals pass you) Then there is the delicious Isle of Harris gin, and distillery tour at Tarbert. If you like walking there are loads of options, my favourite are the "coffin road" from east to west coast and slightly easier the walk up to the eagle hides on the road out to Huishnish, and the many many beaches. Fuel available at Ardhasaig, Tarbert and Leverburgh, there is also a waste disposal facility (dont know the proper term, poop is what i mean!) at leverburgh, down at the pier. Have a great time, say hello from me!
