I was parked in Helensburgh town centre today and nearly copped a ticket.
No yellow lines, no plates on poles with parking restrictions detailed.

It turns out that a new system has been in place since last year.

The only indications for it are chest high signs on pavements at the perimeters of the Restricted Parking Zone stating the speed limit and below that "Restricted Parking. Park in marked bays only". These bays are 1 Hour only.

These signs are easily obscured by other vehicles, moving or not.

Some Argyll & Bute Council comments such as:

Head of Roads and Amenity Services, Jim Smith, explained the reasons for this change: "We’ve made a significant investment on transformational public realm works in Helensburgh, creating a fabulous new town centre for both residents and visitors to enjoy and we don’t want to spoil that with unsightly yellow lines.

No one wants to see yellow lines blotting the town centre when there is a much cleaner alternative. Restricted parking zones need only a small number of signs to tell motorists where they can and cannot park and between what times and are far less intrusive than yellow lines."

I'm told that there are similar RPZ's in other towns, so basically, if there's no yellow lines, look out! WTF!
