After many years with Vodafone, which I started with as they had the best coverage in the part of the Highlands I used to frequent, I am considering moving to Giff Gaff who use O2.

I am guessing that nowadays, there can't be much difference in coverage between Vodafone and O2, across Scotland, but has anyone had issues with O2?

Areas I need it to be at least as good as Vodafone are A9 from Perth to Inverness, A93, A96, A82, A85, and also around the Skye and Lochalsh area.

I'm not too bothered about 4G at the moment.

02 just beats Vodaphone for coverage in the Torridon area. Both have dead spots.

If you're on the main roads then I'm sure you'll be fine. Its off the beaten track/highland areas where each will be different. can'tll having an issue with Vodafone in the areas mentioned.

AS long as you have WiFi Vodafone give the best coverage anywhere in the UK.
Just connect the signal booster and job done!

They all vary hugely within very small areas. I gave up on Vodafone years ago in Scotland and use EE as it is now called. O2 is better than Vodafone in my experience as well but EE is particularly impressive.

Not true if you use the Vodafone signal booster.

I had no Vodafone coverage, but now with the booster, call quality is excellent.

I used to have one of those but obviously it only works at home, not half up a road that another provider might offer a better service on.

I need something properly mobile though - it's not about fixed locations.

I always thought that EE, being a more recent provider, would have poorer coverage out in the "styx". Have you found it OK in the remoter areas?

Depends where you are , last year I was caught in a blizzard coming back from Inverness. I was with Vodafone, my other half was with EE. My mobile said No Signal , while the other half was quite happily streaming Netflix movies on her EE mobile.

I've moved from Vodafone to EE for this reason. Not perfect, but better IME

My Vodaphone coverage on Skye is rubbish!

My brother's work use mobiles a lot in this area and have moved to EE because the coverage is meant to be best.

I had a look at EE's coverage on their website and it seems 3g in Skye and Lochalsh is not great.

We have a mobile mast on our farm adjacent to the A90. Although it is operated and maintained by O2, it is shared by Vodafone.

EE have the best coverage, they have all the legacy T-Mobile and Orange network and also all the new EE 4G masts.

It's interesting no one mentions Three? I used to be on O2 when I lived in Aberdeen, and it was fine until you left the city, then often has zero coverage. When I moved to Portlethen I switched to Three and found they were much better on the likes of the A90 between Aberdeen and Dundee, as well as in places like Portlethen and Stonehaven.

However I moved out to Banchory in the summer and the Three coverage is terrible out there - I can barely use it even for calls or texts. My contract is up in March so I'm considering a move to EE as I've heard good things about them.

Has anyone got any experience with EE in the Deeside area? (Hope the OP doesn't mind a slight widening of the original topic!)

In my experience, mostly with Vodafone and o2, Vodafone and o2 are about on par.

Three and EE I'm not sure overall (never used them as a primary phone) but I've been surprised by them a few times. At my parents place near Ballachulish o2 can barely make calls, vodafone has GRPS only but EE and 3 get 3G. It is good enough that using an iphone on 3 as a hotspot I was able to stream youtube perfectly.

O2 provide the coverage for police Scotland AFIK. I would assume that would mean they may reach some of the more remote places but don't quote me.
