I assume there would be a big difference in insurance company attitude if your car was stolen from your driveway whilst it was being washed if

1. The keys were in the ignition OR
2. The keys were sitting on a coffee table just inside your house?

My car wasn't stolen, it was a hypothetical question but I do believe a similar incident happened earlier in week.

It depends on the a bit more than that,

In the context of your coffee table, would it be in view of a publicly facing window on the ground floor? Are your windows secure? Are your doors secure with the correct type of locks?

With the ignition if you were in the process of entering the car and they barged you out the way it falls into the category of aggravated vehicle taking. If you left it unsecured when you were having a poo they would still be charged with theft but it would be taking a vehicle without the owners consent and driving without adequate insurance. Your insurance company would pay out in instance one but not in instance two.
