This is something that has been making me curious - how are the lampposts on the M74 bridges in Glasgow supported as they are on the other side of the safety barriers.

I happened to be walking under the bridge this morning on Scotland St and see that they are supported by what looks to be a concrete plinth maybe no more than a foot or so deep that just juts out of the bridge support?

So to you engineers out there, how does that have the strength to support the lampposts? The lampposts in my street are much smaller but also go much further into the ground?

Are the motorway ones ultra lightweight or have titanium bases or something?

Im pretty sure this will have been engineered and tested and nothing to worry about. I don't think they will have said to the apprentice "go stick those lampposts up in any way you can mate , try and get it done before finishing time".

Don't get me wrong - I am not thinking that they will fall down, I am more in amazement that the small plinth of concrete can take the weight, the sway etc and was just wondering if there was anything more "technical" about the install.

Usually the base of the lamppost that the post bolts to
Is attached to then metal rebar under the concrete then the post slides into it and then bolted down

Are they not shear bolts, designed to fail in the event of a vehicle hitting the post?
