M74 Average speed cameras
Discussion
Well there is an M9 thread so I may as well start this. Just had one of the most soul crushing motorway drives of my life. 30 minutes on the M74 limited to 50MPH on a quiet dual carriageway (3rd lane closed). 7PM not a worker in site and I dont have cruise control.
This st needs to stop.

I think it's just the summer of infuriating roadworks for Scotland.
The M8 was at a complete standstill around 11am today at Harthill, and the M90 was completely solid on the Fife side all the way from the bridge back past the A92 junction just after that when I passed. It's enough fun sitting in traffic all week long, let alone facing this at the weekend...

I travel this road every day going to work, and fully understand the need for speed reduction at the Raith due to contraflows and serious road reconstruction, and again on the M73, no issues, however I do object to the continuation on the M74 to Cambuslang where there is no sign of work. There is no need, and the M74 is now restricted in speed all the way from Hamilton right through until it joins the M8.
Traffic has been moving ok on my commute just now but I am not looking forward to when the holiday season ends and traffic volumes return to normal.

The problem is that the limit drops miles before the contraflow system and doesnt go back up again for miles after. Besides with the way everythings coned off im sure the vast majority of road users with a modicum of common sense will self regulate there speed down to something appropriate especially if they dont know the road... but that is probably extremely wishful thinking.Traffic has been moving ok on my commute just now but I am not looking forward to when the holiday season ends and traffic volumes return to normal.
I know someone, only two weeks ago, who was travelling from East Kilbride to Coatbridge and ended up at Braehead.....
Was in the wrong lane at the roundabout roadworks at the Raith and then just carried on going until she saw a sign for a place she recognised - Braehead!!
I had to explain to HER that almost all sliproads on motorways will have a way of crossing and going back the other way!!
But in all seriousness, it does show how some people, maybe the less experienced on this road, get themselves totally flustered with all the cones and changes. Makes sense to keep them at a reduced speed!

Was travelling from udingston to the city center and spotted the new average speed cameras. Fair enough if it was a 70 but it's 50 the entire way. Has there been any major accidents along the newish bit of the m74 to require such low speeds and average speed cameras?
I didn't realise that it still (almost) goes all the way from Carlisle to Paisley When I am not cycling, I travel the M74 from Daldowie into the City Centre every morning.
Since the cameras were set up, as much as it sticks in my throat to say it, the traffic is definitely flowing better all the way to the City Centre.
Now there can be some contributing factors
- folks avoiding this whole area due to the roadworks
- holidays / schools off etc
- the roadworks are preventing the volume of traffic hitting the Daldowie side
Undoubtedly, the M74 is like many other roads in the morning, folk drive at the speed limit +10mph until they hit the slow / stationery traffic. It really does make sense at peak times to try to reduce the speed of the traffic and keep it consistent - so for example speed limit of 40mph from Daldowie to M8 junction would probably see traffic flowing better, better mpg, less accidents, less road rage.

Am I alone in wondering how I can be driving along at an indicated 53mph and still get passed by cars which look to be doing closer to 60? Do these people know something I don't?
Indicated 53 is probably nearer 50 in reality, I stick my cruise on at 56ish which is still above 50 but I believe the cameras have at least a 10% threshold ie 55mph so im still within this in real speed not indicated speed.saying all of the above doesnt matter when you're behind someone who slows to 45mph when they approach each of the cameras !! These are people who cant grasp the concept of "average".
