Had a 2005 xc90, 2009 disco 3 and now a 2012 disco 4

If you want comfort, build quality and space the xc90

However the engine and gearbox in the disco 4 (3.0 with 8 speed box) is years ahead of the volvo

Needless to say the disco is also far far more capable off-road.

Tried out a x5 and new range rover sport but they are not proper 7 seaters like the two mentioned above.

If you need loads of space and don't care about looks the Merc GL is huge.
Bit left field R class merc ....more of a van but pretty sure they came in 4wd.

i'm sure with the gl you can only get out of the very back seats on the drivers side.

All the ones listed - yes (on the RRS and X5 - 7 seats is an option)

What's your budget ??

Disco 4. Quality bit of kit and they are a big improvement interior-wise over the D3.

Best for using and reliability is the xc90. But it has the engine from a 1920s Russian tractor, the turning circle of a supertanker and the acceleration of glacial erosion.... But it is comfortable!

It depends on what you really need it to do. We have an XC90 and it's a great car. Bags of boot space, 7 seats and 4x4. It drives well but then if you need true off roading, I'm not sure this would be the car for you. You're probably looking at a disco of some sort.

How about a 10 seat 4x4, the kids love it but it's not my wifes first choice for the school run smile

Nissan Pathfinder?
7 seats 4x4, poor man's Discovery but excellent load lugger and even with the 2 seats in the boot in action still has a half decent boot space. Being based on a pick up its not the most refined and engaging drive but I commute in mine daily and have no complaints.

Nissan Pathfinder, good bit of space even with the seats up, cheaper on road tax after 2010, I had an 07 but got fed up with paying £485 tax. You would get a 2010 maybe for that money.

Disco, high tax, small boot but I do like them.

Mitsubishi Shogun LWB, cheap tax, rear seats fold into floor as one meaning you cants just use one seat in boot when required. You would get a 2012/13 for the money you are talking about spending.

Audi Q7 would love one but like going through tyres apparently. Big boot space.

Toyota Landcruiser. Huge toy, older models have 8 seats

Kia sorrento, small 7 seater but not too bad looking

Mitsubishi Outlander, same as above

xC90 already mentioned.

Google 7 seat 4x4s and you will find a list of them. It all depends what you will be using it for.
